Juneteenth, a combination of "June" and "nineteenth," is celebrated on June 19. After the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in January 1863 and the Confederates surrendered in April 1865, roughly 250,000 African Americans in Texas were slaves until June 19, 1865. Juneteenth was not a federal holiday until 2021, despite being celebrated since 1866.
