Kathak is an Indian Classical dance style from the state of Uttar pzradesh in the northern part of India.Lord krishna is the pioneer of this dance.Lord Krishna is adressed as natwar and so Kathak is also called as Natwari Nritya.Kathak is influenced by both hindu and muslim styles.There are 3 family bases/gharanas of kathal-Lucknow , Jaipur and Banaras.
laya
The regulated time spent in music is called as laya.The tic-toc of a clock and the heartbeat of a man are some of the best examples of laya.If the laya is disturbed even slightly , the clock gets disturbed or the man falls sick.There are 3 types of layas-Vilambit Laya , Madhya laya and Drut Laya.
Sama
The very first beat of every taal is known as sama.IN indian classicla music and dance , all the musical as well as rhythmic conpositions conclude one sama.Sama is the final finish as well as beginning of any musical or rhythmic composition.
Vibhaag
Every taali or khaali in a taal forms a new vibhaag.The total number of taalis + the total number of khaalis=the total number of vibhaags.Due to vibhaag , we can understand the internal rhythmic desgin of a taal.For example , in teentaal there are 16 matras and every taali or khaali arrives after every 4 matras.There are 3 taalis and 1 khaali in teentaal.Therefore , 3+1=4 , so the total number of vibhaags in teentaal is 4.This can also be written as teentaal vibhaag:4-4-4-4

I learn kathak style from my guru Pallavi Degwekar Shaikh.She has learnt Kathak since the age of 10 years under the tutlage of Guru Shrimati Asha Joglekar.She has been honored by the title "Singar Mani" by prestegious national organization-Sur SIngar Samsad India.She has performed in various prestegious dance festivals in India and USA.She is very particular and dedicated in her teaching and teaches us very lovingly but in a very systematic way.These. qualities of hers inspire us and gives us confidence to become fine dancers.
Our Dance school name is Pallavi Kathak which has a structred cirriculum from beginners. til advanced diploma level and is affiliated with Bharati Vidyapeet Pune India.
Vilambit Laya
The laya which is very slow or almost half or less than half the speed of madhy laya is known as vilambit laya.This laya is normally used in indian classical vocal during Khayal Gayaki.We do tatkaar baant in this laya.

Teentaal which is also known as trital
Teentaal or trital has 16 matras and 4 vibhaags and in each vibhaag there are 4 matras.Kaal or khaali is on the 9th beat.Sama is on the first beat.Taal or taali is on beats 1,5 and 13.
Drut Laya
Drut means fast.Therefore the laya which is fast or double the speed of madhya laya is known as drut laya.In indian classical vocal music , drut laya is used for singing compositions such as Tarana or Tirwat.Whereas in Kathak , drut laya is used while performing gat nikas or gat bhav
Kaal/khaali
While reciting any taal on hands , instead of clapping , when we turn our right palm upward in space , thereby making a silent hand movement , such action is known as kaal or khaali.
