What are the books of Samuel about?
The period of time covered by the books of 1 and 2 Samuel is short– only a few decades. At their start, the future Israelite kingdom was still a group of scattered and persecuted tribes. By the end, these tribes had not only united to form a kingdom; together they had turned into a mighty empire, holding sway from Egypt to deep into Syria.

How did David first encounter Saul?
After Samuel’s rebuke of the Amalekite herem, Saul continued as king, but encountered rocky times. David was a fixture in Saul’s court, but Saul became jealous quickly. After killing Goliath, David scored military victories against the hated Philistines. David became Saul’s son- in- law (marrying Michal), and Jonathan’s close friend. Saul’s hatred grew stronger.

He went around extorting money and goods at swordpoint from his fellow citizens (such as Nabal, 1 Samuel 25) in order to pay for his increasingly large entourage of fighters. Same stories, different focuses. Chronicles tells the entire story of Hebrew Bible and also makes David out to be a much better leader than Samuel does. Chronicles also ends with King Cyrus allowing the Israelites to return to Israel.

The purpose of the book is to demonstrate how the fortunes of Israel depended on obedience to the law. Whenever they rebelled against Him, they were oppressed by pagan nations.

How does Saul come to be anointed by Samuel?
Saul’s father, Kish, is a Benjamite. Kish loses some donkeys, sends Saul out to find a “seer” to find them, Saul finds Samuel, signs come true, Saul is reluctant, Saul returns with the donkeys. In the second narrative, Saul is chosen by lots. The D authors were not interested in eliminating all contradictions– they had too much respect for the original authors.

David was from the larger, more powerful tribe of Judah, Saul was a Benjamite. Saul was anointed king of the northern tribes, but his kingdoms (apparently) did not include the hill country of Judah.
