Give one example of a flat bone
Cranial Bones/ The Facial Bones/ Sternum
What is the function of the Sella Turcica?
Holds the pituitary gland
What are the four regions of the temporal bone?
1. Temporal bone- Squamous region, near the parietal bones
2. Temporal bone- Tympanic region, surrounds external ear opening
3. Temporal bone- Mastoid region area posterior to ear
4.Temporal Bone- petrous region, lateral portion of the skull base
What is the function of an articulation?
to allow for flexibility for gross body movements and to hold bones together
Name one chronic illness, mentioned in lab (in the Handout), that may contribue to the development of osteoporosis
Anemia, Anorexia, Leukemia, Lymphoma
What are the Chronic dietary deficiency of ossteoporosis?
Chronic dietary deficiencies in Ca2+, protein, and vitamin C contributes significantly to osteoporosis. And other disorders, like anorexia nervosa or alcoholism, can affect your risk of developing osteoporosis.
What is the function of the Stylomastoid foramen?
Passage CN #7
________ Fractures shatter the affected area into a multitude of bony fragments
Comminuted
Name a joint that holds the teeth in the mandible via the periodontal ligament,
A Gomphosis is a joint that holds the teeth in the mandible via the periodontal ligament.
Describe the sacrum of the female pelvis as compared to the male pelvis (give only female characteristics)
Wider, shorter, and the sacrum is less curver than the male pelvis
What does the Mandibular condyle articulate with?
Articulates with the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone or Temporomandibular joint
What is the function of the Foramen lacerum?
Allows passage of the internal carotid and small nerves
What is the function of Medial palatine suture?
Unites two palantine bones
Are sutures joints? If so, what type of joints are they and what do they do?
Sutures are joints with bones with irregular edges interlocked by short connective tissue fibers (ex. skull).
Name and classify the functionally joints articulations
Synarthroses , non ‐movable joints Amphiarthroses , slightly movable joints Diarthroses , freely movable joints
Function of the Superior Orbital Fissure?
Passageway for CN #'s 3,4, 5, 6
Describe the True Pelvis of a female as compared to the male
True pelvis of the female is broader, more shallow and has greater capcity than the male pelvis
(REVIEW THE PICTURE/FIGURE IN THE TEXTBOOK)
Give Three functions of the Sphenoid bone
1. Articulates with all other cranial bones
2. Holds the pituitary
3. Forms part of the orbits of the eye
Name the 5 charactertistics of the Synovial Joint and what are the types of synovial joints
Synovial joints have bones separated by joint cavities filled with synovial fluid. They are diarthrotic or freely movable.
Characteristics of synovial joints:
1. Articular Capsule, 2 layers a fibrous capsule of dense irregular connective tissue and a layer of synovial membrane which secretes synovial fluid.
2. Articular cartilage (hyaline) on the surfaces of the articulating bones.
3. Ligaments (hold bones of joint together).
4. Bursae (fluid filled sacs).
5. Articular discs may be found (Meniscus), (padding between articulating bones).
Synovial joints are further classified into six different categories on the basis of the shape and structure of the joint. The shape of the joint affects the type of movement permitted by the joint. These joints can be described as planar, hinge, pivot, condyloid, saddle, or ball-and-socket joints.
What is the function of the Canaliculus?
Tiny canals that form a dense transportation network
1. What are the three bone markings/articulation points parts of the Hyoid bone?
2. what are two functions of the Hyoid bone?
3. Does this bone articulate with any other bone, if so, which ones?
The Hyoid serves an attachment for many tongue and neck muscles & protects the larynx
DOES NOT ARTICULATE WITH ANY OTHER BONE
Body of the Hyoid
GREATER CORNU/ GREATER HORN
LESSER CORNU/ LESSER HORN
Give two functions of the mandibular foramen?
1. Mandibular branch of CN #5
2. Site of novacaine injection
What does the occipitomastoid suture articulate?
Articulation between occipital bone and petrous region of temporal bone
Lisa’s daughter Diana was excited to show her mom that she can now snap her fingers. What two types of synovial joints found in the hands made this possible?
A. Hinge joints and ball and socket joints
B. Ball and socket joints and hinge joints
C. Saddle joints and pivot joints
D. Condyloid joints and saddle joints
E. None of the above
D. Condyloid joints and saddle joints
Condyloid joints are found in the hand and allow for the up and down and side to side movements of the fingers. The thumb joint is a saddle joint which allows for the back and forth and up and down movement of the thumb. These two types of joints allow for the movements of the thumb and fingers that Diana is using to snap.
What is the function of the circumferential Lamellae
Lamellae found on the outer portion of a long bone/ forms outer compact bone of long bone
