what is salinity? Where is it the highest in the ocean?

How much salt is in water. The deep ocean

100

What is hazardous waste?

trash that is ignitable, corrosive, reactive and/or toxic.

100

what does pH measure?

how acidic or basic a substance is

100

What is albedo?

Your answer must include an example of a  high albedo surface and a low albedo surface.

Albedo is a measure of how well a surface reflects sunlight back into space.

High: snow, white pavement, ice

low: black top, dark pavement, oceans

Water can dissolve more things that any other natural substance, this is why it is referred to as a....

universal solvent

200

Name a negative environmental impact of incinerators

the release of toxic air pollutants

human health risks

contaminating near by water and soil

200

What does it mean to say that the ocean is a carbon sink?

It absorbs a large amount of CO2 in the atmosphere
200

What is urban sprawl?

the expansion of cities into rural areas. This causes the areas to be more spread out, car dependent and leaves the cities with funding.

300

This layer of the ocean sits between the deep and shallow waters and seperates the warm upper layer and cold deep water layer

the thermocline

300

How are the urban heat island effect and albedo related?

cities and more urban areas have lower albedos because they have fewer green areas. This means they absorb more of the sunlight instead of reflecting it back to space which causes warmer temperatures.

300

What is the relationship between sea level rise and sea ice shrinking?

When arctic sea ice melts faster than it re freezes in the winter then it shrinks. the melted water goes into bodies of water and causes the sea level to rise.

300
How are GMOs formed?

identifying a desired trait in an organism. Then taking the gene from that organism and inserting it into the DNA of another organism.

400

Why is it important that water is transparent and lets sunlight through to layers of the ocean.

so that photosynthetic organisms have light to produce energy

400

What is one benefit of choosing incinerators over landfills for municipal solid waste removal?

Shrinks the volume of waste

Can be used to make energy by capturing the heat from combustion

400
What is an effect of ocean acidification?

dissolving shells

decreased coral growth rates

vulnerable habitats

less available carbonate for organisms to make shells

400

Explain how noise pollution in the ocean affects animals

Disrupts animal's ability to communicate with each other through natural sounds.

Can cause stress on animals and mess with migration patterns.

500

Why is water saltier and colder at the bottom of the ocean?

Because saltier water is more dense which causes it to fall and hot water rises.

500

What are some solutions to the urban heat island effect

green roofs

increasing green space

using light colored pavement

500
How does increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere cause sea level rise?
CO2 is a greenhouse gas. Increasing greenhouse gasses causes an increased greenhouse gas effect which leads to climate change. Warmer atmospheric and ocean temperatures causes sea ice and land glaciers to melt faster which raises the sea level.
500

What is recharge? What is discharge?

Recharge: when water moves into an aquifer through rain or floodwaters

Discharge: when water moves out of an aquifer through springs, rivers or wells
