A large, tall, rocky area of land that comes up out of the Earth's surface.
Mountain
A place where water flows over a cliff.
Waterfall
An area of low land between two mountains or hills, that is "U" or "V" shaped.
Valley
A natural stream of water larger than a brook or creek.
River
A fertile or green area in an arid region. (such as a desert)
Oasis
A mound of raised land that us smaller than a mountain. Usually formed when mountains wear away
Hill
A major body of water that covers large parts of the Earth. Usually salty and have names like Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, etc.
Ocean
Cone shaped mountain. Rock and ash come out of it. Has an opening at the top.
Volcano
A body of water that is surrounded by land.
Lake
A small opening in the ground that is connected to a cave or other opening that meets the ocean where water can shoot out.
Blowhole
A large crack in the Earth formed by a river or earthquakes.
Canyon
An area of land that is completely surrounded by water.
Island
Found in the side of a mountain or in the ground, looks like a hole, often can climb inside.
Cave
A part of the ocean, a lake, etc., that is next to land and that is protected and deep enough to provide safety for ships.
Harbor
A deep, v-shaped land area cut with steep rocky slopes.
Gorge
A large low area of flat land that is often grassy.
Plain
A natural area of water that is mostly surrounded by land. We have one nearby in Monterey.
Bay
A strip of land that extends out into a body of water.
Peninsula
A type of wetland where trees are common.
Swamp
A partially enclosed, coastal water body where freshwater from rivers and streams mixes with salt water from the ocean.
Estuary
A large area of flat land that is raised higher than the land around it. Can be an elevated plain.
Plateau
A narrow strip of land that borders the ocean along land. They are constantly changing because of the water wave action and shifting sand or rock.
Coastline
A narrow strip of land that connects two larger areas of land.
Isthmus
A narrow sea channel.
Strait
An area that contains a chain or group of islands scattered in lakes, rivers, or the ocean.
