A mound of raised land that us smaller than a mountain. Usually formed when mountains wear away.

Cone shaped mountain. Rock and ash come out of it. Has an opening at the top.
What is a volcano?
A large, slow-moving mass of ice and snow that forms on land and flows downhill.

A major body of salt water that covers large parts of the Earth.
What is the ocean?
The largest mountain chain in North America that stretches through New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Alaska.
What are the Rocky Mountains?
A large crack in the Earth formed by a river or earthquakes.
What is a canyon?
Found in the side of a mountain or in the ground, looks like a hole, often can climb inside.

A wetland area characterized by saturated soil, standing water, and a dominant presence of trees and woody vegetation

An area of land that is completely surrounded by water.

The second largest, and the oldest mountain system in North America that extends from Canada down to Alabama.
What are the Appalachian Mountains?
A large low area of flat land that is often grassy.

A strip of land that extends out into a body of water.
What is a peninsula?
A partially enclosed body of water where freshwater from rivers and streams mixes with salt water from the ocean.
What is an estuary?
A natural area of water that is mostly surrounded by land.
What is a bay?
A vast expanse of land once known as the Great American Desert. It is a dry grassy area that runs from Canada into New Mexico and Texas and is important for farming and mining.
What are The Great Plains?
A large area of flat land that is raised higher than the land around it. Can be an elevated plain.
What is a plateau?
A narrow strip of land that connects two larger areas of land.
What is an isthmus?
A man-made or natural body of water that stores water for use.
What is a reservoir?
A narrow strip of land that borders the ocean along land. They are constantly changing because of the water wave action and shifting sand or rock.
What is a coast (coastline)?
Stretches across parts of 4 states - Southeastern California, Southwestern Utah, Southern Nevada and Western Arizona, and has salt flats in the center. There are several types of animals that live here but they must be used to hot weather!
