A sudden and violent shaking of the ground as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action
What is an earthquake?
An area on Earth’s surface that is much higher than the land around it
What is a mountain?
A storm with thunder and lightning and typically also heavy rain or hail.
What is a thunderstorm?
A flat area on Earth’s surface...starting with a P
What is a plain?
A prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, leading to a shortage of water...starts with a D
What is a drought?
A violent discharge of hot materials (lava and gas) from the Earth's interior out of a volcano
What is a volcanic eruption?
Slow moving huge bodies of ice, usually found in the Arctic
What are glaciers?
A depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer
What is a sink hole?
A lowland area between higher lands such as mountains...starts with a V!
What is a valley?
An overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land
What is a flood?
Mobile, destructive, violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud
What is a tornado?
The breaking down of rock on the surface of the earth, usually by the force of water, wind, or ice (starts with a W...think back to our Rocks and Minerals unit!)
What is weathering?
Occurs when masses of rock, earth, or debris move down a slope
What is a landslide?
A deep valley with very steep sides..starts with a C
What is a canyon?
A system of winds rotating inward to an area of low atmospheric pressure, starting on the ocean, and becoming stronger as it hits the land
What is a Hurricane?
A severe rotating storm with high speed winds that forms over warm waters in tropical areas
What is a tropical cyclone or hurricane?
A process that occurs when wind, water, or ice carry small pieces of dirt or rock away from one area to another, resulting in different landforms (Starts with an E...we learned about it in Rocks and Minerals!)
What is erosion?
A severe snowstorm with high winds and low visibility
What is a blizzard?
A flat area higher than the land around it....starts with a P
What is a plateau?
A large, destructive fire that spreads quickly, usually in a wilderness or a rural area
What is a wildfire?
A long high sea wave or series of waves caused by an earthquake UNDER the ocean
What is a tsunami?

A landform surrounded by water on the majority of its border while being connected to a mainland from which it extends...hint...Florida is one...another hint...starts with a P
What is a peninsula?
An event that occurs when heavy snow, lying upon a weaker layer of snow, fractures and slides quickly down a steep slope
What is an avalanche?
