It may look like a regular remote island at first, but it has a sad history. It was inhabited by the Banaban people, until around 1899 when the Brittish annexed to the island and noticed the high amount of phosphate rock that was on the island, and started mining it, making the island barren. This continued until World War 2, when the Japanese murdered all but one of the Banaban people on the island. Only Kabunare Kura survived the massacre. After the war, the Brittish once again started milking the island of it's Phosphate. This continued until 1979 when the island gained independence from the Brittish and became apart of the country of Kiribati. Now it sits as a lonely desolate raised coral island. It has a population of only 330 (as of 2020).
