What is Noun?
Words with the same or similar meanings.
What is Synonym?
Smallest unit of sound that can make a difference to meaning in a language.
For example, the "s" in "books"
What is phoneme?
The language we use to express a function.
e.g. 'Let's go to the cinema tonight'.
What is exponent?
Part of speech that describes or gives more information about a noun, pronoun or part of a sentence
What is adjective?
Groups of words that belong to the same topic area. e.g. family, furniture, food

Use of the symbol (') in a phonemic transcription.
e.g /'stju:dənt/
What is word stress?
Language used in more official and important situations amongst people who do not know each other very well.
What is formal language?
Verb tense that describes actions or situations which happen repeatedly but which might not be happening at the moment.
e.g. I read newspapers and magazines.
What is simple present?
Words with the same spelling and pronunciation as another word, but a different meaning.
e.g. 'they sat on the river bank', 'he put all his savings into the bank'.
What is homonyms?
We say different parts of the sentence with more or less stress.
i.e. slower and louder, or quicker and more softly.
What is sentence stress?
Language that often occurs in relaxed situations, amongst friends, people who know each other well or treat each other in a relaxed way.
What is informal language?
Verb tense that describes past actions which have some connection to the present.
e.g. I've seen that film.
What is present perfect?
Fixed expression as they can't be changed, but their meaning is usually different from the combination of the meaning of the individual words they contain.
e.g. to be under the weather, to have green fingers, once in a blue moon.
What is idioms?
The way a speaker changes the level of their voice to show meaning.
i.e. the meaningful tune of a sentence or a group of words.
What is intonation?
People usually choose to use the level of formality that suits a situation.
e.g. A teacher greeting her class could choose to say I'd like to wish you all a very good morning' or 'Hi, guys!'.
