Jose Marti grew in cuba whenit was still a Spanish colony. At the age of 16,he started a newspaper dedicated to cuban independence. After he supported an 2868 uprising, Marti was sent to prison. He spent many years in exile,working for Cuban freedom by writing and publishing, and by helping to form a revolutionary party. In 1895,Marti led an invasion of Cuba to free the island from Spanish rule. He was killed on the battlefield a month later - 7 years before Cuba achieved independence. This statue of Marti is in New York City's Central Park.
