What year did the ACA - affordable care and patient protection act - get signed into law?

The ACA is often misconstrued as universal health care, and the end of the need for free clinics; this could not be further from the truth. While many are now insured, patients seek our care because they cannot afford to use their coverage due to provider shortages, prohibitively high deductibles, co-insurance, and/or co-pays.

What is an appointment?

Lake County Free Clinic is not an urgent care or walk-in facility, as our clinicians and services may vary according to provider schedules and clinic capacity.

If someone does walk-in and need is urgent, we will try and fit them in or have them seen by a nurse (if possible) or direct them to the nearest urgent care, emergency room, or other appropriate option.

The year that LCFC started using Electronic Medical Records?

LCFC utilizes EPIC MyPractice Community.

This system is obtain at very low-cost to our organization through a strong relationship and the support of Cleveland Clinic and is quite robust. Having the same system and e-scripting functionality allows us to communicate between practices and ensure continuity of care if possible when patients come from or end up needing more advanced treatment.

The challenge of the system is that there is a larger learning-curve than paper charting or more simple EMR systems, which can be challenging for new volunteers who have not used this program or older volunteers who have limited use in EMRs.

What is the mission of Lake County Free Clinic?

A "free clinic" is a health care facility in the United States offering services to economically disadvantaged individuals for free or at a nominal, free-will donation. It is a vital part of social safety-net. Core staff members may hold paid positions, however, many of the staff a patient will encounter are volunteers drawn from the local medical community.

Care is provided free of cost to those uninsured or those underinsured; meaning those who have only limited medical coverage, or who have insurance, but their policies include high medical deductibles that they are unable to afford. These are the working poor that make up the majority of our patients.
