On a busy medical-surgical unit, many patients are ready to go home by mid-morning, but their actual discharge is often delayed until late afternoon. This causes bed shortages, frustration for patients and families, and stress for staff who are preparing new admissions.

With your team, make a detailed flow chart of this scenario, that shows the process of discharging a patient.

Outcome:

A: Best initiative:

You form part of Titan Hospital, whose ICU is short-staffed this morning. The staff is experiencing increased workload, and the situation is threatening the effective and safe delivery of patient care.

Discuss among your groups what would be the roles of a leader versus the roles of a manager in thai scenario?

The manager would use their assigned position and legitimate source of power to implement changes in the staffing schedule, ensuring that all patient assignments are covered. They would allocate resources, organize workloads, and direct tasks to ensure the functionality of the unit despite this challenge.

A leader does not have delegated authority, therefore, their role would be to empower the unit to persevere through this challenge. They may advocate for change, encourage others to voice their concerns related to the staffing shortage, and lead in problem-solving to ensure efficiency and support in the unit. They may take this opportunity to empower long-term change related to staffing challenges.

Scenario: You are part of a newly formed interdisciplinary healthcare team. In the beginning, everyone was polite and displayed eagerness for this newly formed team. Now, as planning begins, your team members are starting to argue and clash with one another regarding the division of responsibilities. Progress is slow as emotions are high, and some are starting to no longer participate in group discussions due to the conflict.

What stage of Bruce Tuckman’s phases of team development is this group currently in? If you were a leader or team member, what would you do to transition the team into the next phase (and what is that phase called?)

Storming → Norming

The standard to base off of for choosing the correct answer:

  • Requesting and encouraging feedback

  • Identifying issues and facilitating their resolution

  • Normalizing matters

  • Building trust by honoring commitments
