What is an Academic Advisor?
A faculty member who provides assistance in academic planning.

What is a Syllabus?
An outline of the course including assignments; test and quiz dates; and policies regarding attendance, participation, and grading.

What is a Minor?
Minors are a second course of study done in addition to a declared major. They are optional and consist of a minimum of 12 credits above the introductory level. Refer to College Catalog for specific minor details.

What is a Prerequisite?
A requirement that must be met before a student is eligible to take a certain course. Frequently this is a specific course that must be completed in order to advance to another course.

What is Add/Drop Period?
During the first 14 calendar days after Registration, students may add or drop courses from their schedule without penalty or fee. The first week is an open process on-line. The second week requires a form and approriate signatures.

What is a Semester?
Curry College divides the academic year into two traditional sessions – fall (September - December) and spring (January-May). In addition there are two summer sessions and a January intersession.

What is an Educational Plan?
A multi-semester academic plan, designed by a student with professional support, which moves a student towards his/her educational goal.

What is a Major?
A course of study considered a principal field of specialization.

What is a Co-requisite?
A course that must be taken at the same time as another because the skills and the content in one are needed for success in the other.

What is a Placement Assessment?
A standardized assessment (test) is given by the College to assist a student in selecting the most appropriate math and English courses.

What is a Transcript?
The official record of a student’s academic coursework. These records are located in the Registrar’s Office. Refer to the college catalog for specific information.

What is a Bachelor Degree?
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree and the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree are awarded by four-year colleges and universities upon successful completion of an organized program of study. This is commonly referred to as a "four-year college degree" although it is common for students to take more than four years to earn it.

What is Matriculated/Degree of Candidacy?
A degree student is one who has been made application and been officially accepted to become a candidate for the baccalaureate degree.

What is the meaning of Incomplete Course Status?
The incomplete is an administrative designation that means a course instructor has agreed to a specified extension of time, not more than one academic year, within which a student may complete a course. An unresolved Incomplete will be recorded as an F. Students must be passing the course to request this option.

What is Withdrawal from a course?
Students may ordinarily withdraw from courses up to the 10th week of classes. Not attending a course does not constitute an official course withdrawal. The student will recieve a W on their academic history. This does get calculated into attempted credits and does impact academic progress.

What are Credits?
The measurement of college credit given for each course. In general, 3 credits requires 2.5 hours/150 minutes of lecture per week. For example, an English class that meets 50 minutes, three times per week is awarded three credits. Courses with lab sections are calculated differently. The credit value for each course is listed in the college catalog and Course Selection Guide as part of the course description.

What are the Graduation Requirements?
Students must earn 120 credits, complete an academic major and CLAC requirements. A grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale is needed.

What are Electives?
Courses that student choose in order to explore areas of interest. These credits count toward the 120-credit graduation requirement.

What is Repeating a Course?
A student may repeat a course once when the initial grade is C- or lower. One repeated course is permitted per semester. Refer to the College Catalog for specific information.

What is Pass/Fail (P/F)?
Students may choose to take one course per semester on a Grade P/F basis, but it may not be in the "core" of the major. Students may specify a minimum course grade of D- or higher by contract with the course instructor. The deadline to declare a course on a pass/fail basis is the 10th week of the semester. Students who earn a P will earn the credits but this does not impact GPA. Students who earn a letter grade other than F will earn the course credits and it will be factored into the GPA. Students who earn an F will not earn the credits and it will impact the GPA.

When is a student considered a Full-time Student?
Full-time Students: Students must be enrolled in 12-18 credits per semester to be certified as having full-time status.

What is CLAC?
Central Liberal Arts Curriculum: A two-part Central Liberal Arts Curriculum to be completed as a requirement for graduation. First time freshmen must complete CLAC I and CLAC II core requirements. Transfer student liberal arts requirements are modified depending on number of credits transferred to Curry. Refer to College Catalog for specific details.

What is a Individual Initiated Major (IIM)?
This major provides an opportunity for students to construct a major that demonstrates depth of learning by combining two or more subject areas.

What is the meaning of Credit by Evaluation?
Students may earn credits outside the traditional classroom. These include the standardized College Level Examination Program (CLEP), the American College Testing Programs (ACT/PEP) or the DANTES Subject Standardized Testing (DSST) program. Students may also do a proficiency evaluation for credits for many courses at Curry. Please refer to the Curry Catalog for specific information on these options.

What does Academic Probation mean?
Students on academic probation are not considered to be making satisfactory progress and are liable for dismissal from the College. Students on academic probation are not eligible for financial aid and may not participate in intercollegiate athletics. These students will also be required to follow an Acadmeic Plan.
