Phylloxera- A plant louse that is native to eastern North America. These nearly microscopic insects devastated vineyards across the globe in the late 1800s. The only cure is to graft vines to native American rootstock which has developed an immunity to phylloxera. The roots of the American vines exude a sticky sap that rebels the nymph form when it tries to feed by clogging its mouth.
