What is an MCH Leader?

This training program was developed by the maternal and child health bureau to improve the health status of infants, children, and adolescents with or at risk for neurodevelopmental and related disabilities and their families. This is accomplished through the training of professionals for leadership roles in the provision of health and related care, continuing education, technical assistance, research and consultation. Interdisciplinary training is the hallmark of this program.

This faculty members mentor students in exemplary MCH public health practice, advance the field through research and develop curricula for interdisciplinary leadership education. This person should be your first go to person if you have a question about any administrative or clinical needs.

What is a training coordinator?

This discipline focuses on the developmental and functional needs of children who have difficulty moving because of injury, disease or other health conditions. In pediatrics this discipline assists in early detection of health problems and working to help children find a way to move about and interact with their environment. We focus on gross motor skills, such as walking, running, and jumping.

What is physical therapy?

A group of health care professional from diverse fields who work in a coordinated fashion toward a common goal for the patient.  At CDRC this can consist of multiple disciplines such as OT, PT, SLP, special education, social work, psychology and a developmental pediatrician for LEND clinic. 

What is an Interdisciplinary team?

This leadership competency involves the processing of assessing the impact of personal values, beliefs, communication styles, cultural influences, and experiences on one’s personal and professional leadership style.

This is an organization located within universities across the nation, that focus on improving the lives of people with disabilities and their families. Through education, service, research and outreach activities, this organization works to be instrumental in changing policy, providing training, and educating the public about major disability issues.  

What is a UCEDD?

This is the person you should go to if you have questions about the family mentor experience for LEND, need a family resource or just have a question on the family perspective. She is also the family involvement coordinator at the Oregon Title V program for Children with Special Health. 

Who is Tami Bakewell, MA?

Helps children learn the “skills for the job of living.” Goal is to enhance a child’s life by giving them the tools to participate in daily life activities such as self-care, play and school-related activities.  Some examples could be feeding therapy, handwriting, and/or sensory integration. 

What is occupational therapy?

This is an approach to planning, delivery and evaluation of health care that is grounded in mutually beneficial partnerships among health care providers, patients, and families. It redefines the relationships in health care by placing an emphasis on collaborating with people of all ages, at all levels of care, and in all health care settings.

What is family centered care?

Members of these teams include a variety of professionals, MCH populations, family and self-advocate leaders, and community partners.

This area provides a rich training environment for LEND trainees with its family-centered clinics at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. It is an academic, service, and research unit within OHSU and is unique in combining the State Services for Children with special health needs and a University center on developmental disabilities; it is marked with a cute purple chipmunk.

What is the CDRC?

This person is the LEND director and a speech language pathologist. She keeps all the training coordinators in line, handles all things related to budget and money, and shares all the great things we do in the LEND program with the larger OHSU family, external community programs, and with our national partners.

Provide hearing tests and evaluations for infants and children of all ages and developmental levels.

This is a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions begin during the developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime.

This MCH competency includes shared decision making, always involving individuals and the family in planning and implementing activities. 

What is family-professional partnerships?

The clinic is an interdisciplinary clinic involved in the evaluation of children with a variety of developmental needs. This clinic primarily evaluates school age children between the ages of six to eighteen. Children referred to this clinic often have problems related to a combination of developmental concerns including cognitive delays, academic difficulties, behavioral difficulties, social/emotional concerns, speech delays, poor motor skills, and other medical disorders.

Is the LEND training director and works to ensure we have a great training and education program! She is also the clinical training coordinator for psychology. You would go to this person if you had a question about ID seminar or concerns about training.

Who is Sage Saxton, Psy.D.?

Helps children and young adults with all types of language difficulties, such as comprehension, expression, fluency, feeding, swallowing, and augmentative and alternative communication.

These are top students in their field who show promise to become leaders through teaching, research, clinical practice and/administration and policymaking to go on and ultimately affect maternal and child health through one or more paths.

Is a membership organization that supports and promotes a national network of university-based interdisciplinary programs. Network members consist of UCEDDs, LEND programs, and IDDRC’s. These programs serve and are located in every U.S. state and territory and are all part of universities or medical centers. They serve as a bridge between the university and the community, bringing together the resources of both to achieve meaningful change.
