What is Lent?

Lent is the Christian season of spiritual preparation before Easter. 

During Lent, many Christians observe a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, self-denial, and spiritual discipline. The purpose of the Lenten season is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ—to consider his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial, and resurrection.

The celebration on the day before Lent begins is called this?

Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday is the celebration on the Tuesday before Lent begins. 

As this is the last day of the Christian liturgical season historically known as Shrovetide, before the penitential season of Lent, related popular practices, such as indulging in food that one might give up as their Lenten sacrifice for the upcoming forty days.  The term Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday.

Maundy Thursday is the day before Good Friday.  It commemorates the night before Jesus dies, where he shared the Passover meal and washed the feet of his disciples.  . 

The word "Maundy" is derived from the Latin "mandatum," which means "commandment." It refers to when Jesus, in the Upper Room during the Last Supper, said to the disciples: "A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another." (John 13:34, RSV)

What is Good Friday?  

Why is it called GOOD?

Good Friday is observed on the Friday before Easter Sunday. On this day Christians commemorate the passion, or suffering, and death on the cross of Jesus Christ. 

It is called Good Friday because "It was not nails that held Jesus to that wretched cross; it was his love for his Father, to do his Father’s will—and it was his love for sinners like us." It is a GOOD day because he traded places for you and for me. It is a GOOD day because it was the day he conquered sin and death so that we will never be apart from God on this side of heaven or the other.
