What do we use blowdryers?
Blowdryers are used to dry and style hair by reforming hydrogen bonds that were broken when the hair was shampooed.
There are standards and procedures set in place by the Occupational Hazard Safety Association. WHAT ARE THEY? What is the acronym?
(OSHA) to ensure that both your Guest and you are safe. It is necessary to follow all disinfection policies to prevent the spread of infection.
Why do we drape?
Safety must come first when servicing your Guests to protect them from potential exposure to hair and scalp diseases and/or harm to their skin or clothing. Therefore, it is important to provide protective clothing and follow salon sanitation and disinfection guidelines for the health and safety of everyone involved.
Describe a Paddle brush and why it is used?
Paddle Brushes can have boar, nylon or a combination of bristles with a base of plastic, wood or cushioned rubber. The paddle brush is used for controlling large amounts of hair. By keeping the cuticle layer of the hair shaft unruffled, it increases the shine of a finished hair design.
How do we determine face shape?
The position and prominence of facial bones determines the Face Shape. Knowing your Guest’s facial shape is crucial in recognizing how to balance the hair design. Facial Proportion is the relationship of facial features and shapes to each other.
To determine your Guest’s facial shape, draw their hair away from the face and neck, allowing full view from the hairline to chin and from ear to ear. Mentally trace the perimeter of the face. Is it wide or long? Where is the widest area? Which facial feature is the most appealing and which is the least? Let this general impression guide you as you visualize the seven face shapes.

Why do we use capes on guests?
Capes are used to cover your Guest’s clothing to protect it from damage during hair services.
Capes are available in different materials, lengths, widths and colors, and have a variety of
closures. Most capes are machine washable, but not all are dryer safe.
Describe a Teasing brush and when they are used?
Teasing Brushes (Back-Brushing) have nylon, boar or a combination of bristles in varying lengths and have a tail that can be used for sectioning and/or smoothing. These brushes are ideal for back-brushing hair and smoothing a finished style.
Describe the round face?
The Round (Circle) face is almost as wide as it is long. It typically features a wider middle zone, shorter chin and rounded hairline. Balance the round face with angular hair designs and elongate the face. Add volume or height at the top of the head and decrease the volume along the sides.

What do Disinfectants do?
Disinfectants control or destroy most pathogenic microorganisms on the surface of tools and implements.
Why do we use Neck strips?
Neck Strips are wrapped around your Guest’s neck to prevent skin-to-cape contact. Neck strips are available in paper or cloth and come in different widths and lengths.
Describe a vent brush and how it is used?
Vent Brushes help remove water from hair prior to styling, and are usually made of materials that resist heat and chemicals. The bristles are farther apart with openings in between, allowing air to circulate while blow-drying and drying hair faster. Vent brushes help create direction, movement and lift to the hair. Some vent brushes are double sided and have shorter bristles on one side to help mold and lift the hair in the scalp area. The larger bristles help smooth and distribute the hair.
Is the Straight profile the ideal profile?
Straight Profile – The forehead, nose and chin align, creating a slight outward curvature. This is considered to be the ideal profile.
What is a heater or a stove?
HEATER
A Heater is sometimes called a stove. It is used to heat conventional irons and pressing combs. Heaters are available with small or large mouths for heating one or several irons or combs at a time and come with adjustable handle rests.
What are common forms of disinfectants?
Common forms of disinfectants are quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) and phenols.
Describe Cloth Towels and their use?
Cloth Towels are made from an absorbent, washable material and will help to catch water or chemical liquids that may possibly escape during the service. Towels are also used to remove moisture from hair and dry hands after washing.
Describe a pin brush and it's use?
Pin Brushes have heat-resistant nylon bristles on a rubber backing, which can be removed for cleaning. Pin brushes smooth hair while blow-drying, reduce friction and eliminate static.
How do you style the hair for a narrow forehead?
Narrow forehead – Style the hair away from the outer edge to add width.
Describe heater features
Most heaters have a convenient on / off switch built into the cord. Some features of stoves include detachable temperature testers for irons and racks with holders of various shapes and sizes to hold the irons or combs. A thermal carrying case is essential for storing and organizing irons and pressing combs.
Do containers that are labelled list the microorganisms for the product rated effective? and how is it labelled?
All containers should be labeled to list the microorganisms for which the product is rated effective. Always add water first and then mix the disinfectant into the water to the appropriate strength required. Most disinfectants work in 10 to 15 minutes. Prolonged immersion of tools in a solution may damage them. Any item that cannot be disinfected must be discarded.
Draping for Hairdesign Services- (Wet Styles, Thermal Styles, Hair Additions and Formal Hairdesigns)
1. Wash and sanitize your hands.
2. Have your Guest remove all jewelry and glasses
and store items away for safekeeping. Do not
place them on the station where loss or damage
may result.
3. Turn under your Guest’s collar, if applicable, to
help protect it from chemicals and water damage.
4. Place a neck strip around your Guest’s neck.
5. Place a towel around your Guest’s neck, crossing
in the front.
6. Place a cape around your Guest’s neck and
fold first towel down over the cape. Ensure that
the towel and cape are tight enough to prevent
dripping, but not so tight as to be uncomfortable
for your Guest.
7. Place a second towel around your Guest’s neck
and secure by clipping it in the front. Place the
clip low enough on the towel so your Guest can
comfortably bend their neck.
8. Before your Guest reclines into the shampoo
bowl, ensure the cape is draped over the back
of the chair. This will help to prevent damage
to your Guest’s clothing. It is best to recheck
this every time your Guest leans forward.
Describe a round brush and how it is used?
Round Brushes are available in a variety of diameters, materials and colors. Some have a metal barrel, which when used with a blow-dryer, mimics the action of a curling iron. The amount of curl is controlled by the size of the brush and how the hair is heated and cooled while it is wrapped around the brush. A round brush is
made with nylon, boar and/or ball-tipped bristles.
