What is Popular Sovereinty?
These words, written in the Preamble, indicate that the Constitution is built on the principle of Popular Sovereignty.
What is "We the People"
This section of the Constitution explains the process for adding, or amending it.
What is Article V?
Who is James Madison?
The president has this power to reject a bill sent to him by Congress.
What is veto power?
This system means that power is shared between the state and federal government.
What is Federa?lism
This section of the Constitution protects the individual freedoms of citizens.
To make a change or add to the Constitution, 2/3 of the members of these two groups must PROPOSE an amendment.
The House of Representatives and the Senate
These powers are those shared by the states and the federal government, like raising taxes.
What are concurrent powers?
These powers of Congress are specifically written out in the Constitution.
What are enumerated powers?
Powers that are given to the Federal government but not to the states in the Constitution.
What are "delegated" powers?
The main body of the Constitution contains 7 of these, which outline the structure and function of the government.
What are the Articles?
The president has this role in the amendment process.
What is "to approve or disapprove" of an amendment only.
This clause indicates that the Constitution is the "supreme law of the land" and that it superceedes all state and local laws.
What is the "Supremacy Clause"
These powers are saved for the states, such as issuing drivers or marriage licenses, or building public schools.
What are reserved powers?
This process means to remove an elected official from office.
What is impeachment
This word, written in the Preamble, tells us that the Founding Fathers wanted the Constitution to endure for generations to come.
What is "posterity"?
The Founding Fathers made to sure include a process for amending the Constituition for this reason.
What is "because they knew that the world would change over time".
The 4th Amendment to the Constitution protects against this.
What is unreasonable search and seizures.
This type of judiciary ensures that federal judges are not influenced by politics and money, and can focus on interpretting and upholding the Constitution.
What is independent?
This is the section of the Constitution that protects the individual rights of citizens.
What is the Bill of Rights?
This clause, also called the Elastic Clause", says that Congress has powers not specifically written in the Constitution. They can exercise these powers when they absolutely need to in order to do their job.
What is the "Neccessary and Proper" Clause.
There are this many amendments in the Bill of Rights.
What is ten.
Because of this system, each branch of the government is able to limit the power of the other branches, which keeps any one branch from becoming too powerful.
What is "checks and balances"
This "rule" means that everyone, even members of the government, must obey the laws of the Constitution.
