100

The scientific study of the remains of ancient animals and plants.

Paleontology
100

Not existing anymore; having no living members.

Extinct

100

Only eats meat.

Carnivore

100

Is a pterosaur a dinosaur?

No

100

Eats both meat and plants.

Omnivore

200

The preserved remains, or traces of remains, of ancient organisms.

Fossil

200

An extinct group of reptiles.

Dinosaurs

200

Only eats plants.

Herbivore

200

What plesiosaur had a long neck and small head?

Elasmosaurus

200

The only fossil for this extinct marine animal we have recovered is its many teeth.

Megaladon

300

Where was the Megalosaurus first discovered?

Oxfordshire, England

300

Why were dinosaurs so big?

-Pneumatic Bones

-More vegetation/oxygen to consume

300

What key part of identifying a species tells us if it was a herbivore or carnivore?

Teeth

300

an extinct group of marine reptiles

plesiosaur

300

What country was the Argentinosaurus found in?

Argentina

400

An indent mark formed by life preserved in rock.

Impression

400

What dinosaur was commonly called "duck-billed dinosaur"?

Parasaurolophus

400

What can we assume about a fossil with flat teeth.

It was a herbivore.

400

an extinct group of flying reptiles

pterosaur

400

What dinosaur was believed to be highly intelligent?

Velociraptor

500

The process of organisms being exposed to minerals and turning into a stonelike substance over a period of time.

Petrification

500

Bones with an air-filled cavity inside them.

Pneumatic Bones

500

Amateur paleontologists reported finding a complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton in a cornfield in Iowa, USA. They said they saw the bones sticking up out of the mud and were so excited to find the white bones that they immediately started digging them up. They found 50 bones in total and laid them out. They reported that it was a small T. rex, only 2.74 meters (9 feet) long. They were very excited to have found a T. rex skeleton, or did they?

No! The first problem is that fossils are not likely to be found in Iowa farmland because there are no rock formations, such as cliffs or mountains. Second, fossils found in this area are not completely white because they turn into petrified rock, which is generally gray, black, or brown. Finally, a complete skeleton of a T. rex would contain 380 bones, not 50. The bones in the story could not have been the bones of a T. rex.

500

What three types are classified in the group Reptilia?

pterosaur, plesiosaur, dinosaur
500

the process of fossilization that takes place as mineral water fills space in an organism and hardens into rock over a period of time

Permineralization
