What do we call it when light “bounces off” an object
Reflect
Explain whether white or black will feel warmer if left in the sun and why
Black will feel cooler because it almost all of the light’s energy
What is the job of the eye?
The collect and focus light in order to see
Define Visible Light
The part of the electromagnetic spectrum we can see (ROY G BIV)
What is energy?
The ability to do work
The word we use for when visible light is “taken in” by an object and not bounced off
Absorbed
Why does an object look its color (red, green, etc)? For example, why is an apple red?
An object “shows” color because it absorbs almost all the colors of the visible light spectrum but reflects the one that you see.
The lens focuses light on what part of the eye?
The retina
Define Transparent
To be able to see through something
Name at least 4 types of energy you’ve learned about
Chemical, radiant, electrical, thermal, mechanical
The word we use when light goes through an object
Transmitted
What is happening with energy when a magnifying glass burns a piece of paper (You’ll need to include the two types of energy in your answer)
Radiant light from the sun is focused through the lens of a magnifying glass in a concentrated amount on the piece of paper where it is converted into thermal energy.
What is the clear, protective coating on the front of the eye?
The cornea
Define Conversion
To change from one form to another
What is the Law of the Conservation of Energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be converted from one form to another
Light is a form of what?
Energy
How does the amount of light in a room determine whether it will mainly reflect off of or transmit through a piece of transparent glass?
Light will either transmit or reflect more depending on where the larger amount of light is. If there’s more light inside a room, it will reflect and you’ll see yourself. If there’s more light outside a room, it’ll transmit and you’ll see through the glass.
Why can the eye not see in its blind spot and where is the blind spot?
The blind spot is the the back of the retina where the optic nerve is. People cannot see there because there are not rods and cones.
Define Transmission
To be able to pass through something
What happens (regarding energy) to food when you eat it and then go outside to play?
Your body converts the food (Chemical Energy) into the ability to move in play (Mechanical Energy).
Name at least 5 types of waves on the electromagnetic spectrum
Gamma Rays, UV Rays, Infrared Rays, Visible Waves, Micro Waves, X Rays, Radio Waves,
Using the Law of Energy Conservation in your explanation, tell me why a swinging balloon can light a light bulb?
Because we know that energy cannot not be destroyed, but only converted, the mechanical motion of the swinging balloon moves the electrical charges in the air around it which moves the electrical charges in the light bulb causing them to convert into radiant energy.
Explain the job of the rods and of the cones and what type of light they each work in.
Rods detect black and white in dim light. Cones detect color in bright light
Define Infrared Light
What are the three forms of energy that are used when a battery turns on a flashlight. Put them in the correct order in which they are used
The stored chemical energy of the flashlight turns into electrical energy which then comes out of the flashlight as radiant energy
