Two parts: how many sentences does a paragraph need? How many paragraphs does an essay need?

A paragraph needs as many sentences as needed to cover ONE topic well.
An essay needs as many body paragraphs as reasons given in the thesis, plus an intro and a conclusion.

How do we create an argument? 

We come up with a topic and a point of view (neutral). Then, we come up with three premises that will lead to the conclusion (which is the thesis/claim).
