What is a thesis? (explain the purpose and how it is written)
It is the main idea of an essay; it tells the reader what the author's intent is. It needs a topic, author's point of view, and reasons to be explained in the essay.

What is a comma splice?
Two complete sentence joined with only a comma

What is a run-on sentence?
A sentence that has too many ideas without proper punctuation
Correct this sentence: Although the students were studying in the library they will fail the course
Although the students were studying in the library, they will fail the course.
Explain logos and pathos.
Logos is presenting facts in a logical way and appealing to the reader's sense of order/logic.
Pathos is appealing to the reader's values, emotions, beliefs.
How are the topic sentences connected to the thesis.
Each topic sentence must relate to the thesis and explain one of the reasons for my claim.
What is an attributive tag? (give a definition and 2 examples)
Correct this sentence: My apartment is very noisy I am looking for another place
My apartment is very noisy. I am looking for another place.
My apartment is very noisy, so I am looking for another place.
Combine the sentences with a subordinating conjunction. Do both options: my apartment is very noisy / I am looking for new place
I am looking for a new place because my apartment is very noisy.
Because my apartment is very noisy, I am looking for a new apartment.
How are purpose and style (the way you write) connected?
Each text structure (the way we write) has a purpose. Knowing the purpose of my writing tells me what structure I need to use.
A paragraph needs as many sentences as needed to cover ONE topic well.
An essay needs as many body paragraphs as reasons given in the thesis, plus an intro and a conclusion.
How do we create an argument?
We come up with a topic and a point of view (neutral). Then, we come up with three premises that will lead to the conclusion (which is the thesis/claim).
