Why might a long drought be a problem for farmers or people in towns and cities?

(a) Farmers?

If it doesn’t rain for a long time, crops and grass don’t grow or die off. The farmers then have nothing to sell so have no money to buy more seeds or look after their families. If the farmers have animals, they will not have grass or hay to feed them and they will either die or have to be sold at a low price.

(b) People in towns and cities?

Food prices rise when the farmers can’t produce enough crops and animals to sell. When the dams that supply towns and cities with water are low, water restrictions are introduced to try to stop people wasting water. People might not be able to water their gardens, and are encouraged to use less water in the home, e.g., by having shorter showers.
