What does "browsing" mean?
Browsing is when we walk around the library looking at the shelves, looking at books, and thinking about what we might like to read.
How loudly can you talk in the library? Say this sentence to demonstrate appropriate volume: "Books are magic"
You don't need to whisper. Your volume should be "talk to your neighbor" loud, not "playground" loud

What does it mean to "check out" a book?
The book is going OUT of the library. You are going to see Ms. Gilkey and then taking the book home for the week.
If you and another student both want the same book, the same pen, or another shared resource how can you decide who should get it without involving Ms. Gilkey?

Respond as you've been instructed, then stop talking or moving and face Ms. Gilkey.
If a book is propped up on a shelf on a display, can you pick it up, look at it, or check it out during browsing time?
Yes! Displays are there to catch your eye. Ms. Gilkey might need to keep the book from a lesson to teach another class, but books on display are there for you to look at during browsing time.
What does it mean to "check in" a book?
The book is coming IN to the library. You are done reading it and you are returning it.
What do you do before lining up at the end of the class
-Push in chairs
-Pick up trash
-Put pens/pencils in containers
There is a white sticker with stripes on the back of the book that has to be scanned to check out a book. What is this called? Bonus 50 points: Many books have two of these stripy spots on the back. How do you know which one you should scan to check out a book?
The bar code. The one that is printed directly on the book is what you would use to purchase the book in a store. The library bar code says Eugene 4J schools on it in tiny letters and has a clear protective sticker over it.
You need to go to the bathroom. How should you signal this, and when during library time is it best to go? Which bathroom do you use?
-Try not to go during the lesson. Most of us can hold it for 20 minutes unless it is an emergency. If you have an emergency every week you need to speak with your grownup about being ill.
-Hold up your fingers crossed, like you're making a wish.
Some books tell stories based on imagination. What is this type of book called, and where in the library would I find this type of book?

You are bored, or you want to just look for books, or you don't think the lesson is important. When can you share those opinions?
Not during the lesson. You can talk later to your friends, your family, you can talk about it during browsing time with Ms. Gilkey. Sharing those thoughts during the lesson will not change the lesson or how long it takes.
