Slave dealers were considered disreputable, slaves were placed on raised platforms for examination and often medical examiners were brought in, Newly-imported slaves had their feet whitened with chalk and those from the East had their ears pierced. Each slave had to wear a placard around his neck, where the dealer had to write the slave’s faults and state his nationality. Slaves of great beauty or value were shown to buyers in private.
