The parable of the unforgiving servant depicts a man who owes his king "ten thousand talents." This is a very large debt that would be equivalent to millions of dollars. (In other words, a debt that would be impossible to repay...) When the servant is brought before the king, he cannot repay the debt he owes, and seeks the king's mercy, which the king then gives, pardoning the servant's debt. The servant then goes out and seizes a fellow servant who owes him a much smaller debt (the amount of one day's work) and chokes the fellow servant demanding that he "pay back what you owe." The fellow servant begs the servant for mercy, but the servant refuses and throws him into prison. News of the servant's actions reaches the king, who then hands the servant, who could not be merciful like the king, to the torturers until he can pay back the impossible debt. This parable occurs in this Gospel account.
