What is Setting
The main character in a story or drama; the character we focus our attention on
Protagonist
A struggle or clash between opposing characters, forces, or emotions
What is Conflict?
A person, place, thing, or event that stands both for itself and for something beyond itself
Symbol
The narrator is a character in the story and uses the pronoun “I”
What is first person?
The part of the plot that gives information about the characters and their conflicts
What is Exposition?
A character whose personality changes or evolves over the course of a narrative or appears to have the capacity for such change
What is a Dynamic Character?
A struggle between opposing needs, desires, or emotions within a single character
Internal Conflict
Used to define the characteristics of a human using animal instincts and behavior
What is Animal Imagery?
The central idea, insight, or message of a work of literature. Should be written as a universal statement
What is Theme?
The point in a story when all the struggles are over and we know what is going to happen to the characters in the story
What is Resolution?
Attributes the qualities of a character in a description or commentary
What is Direct Characterization?
A character struggles against some outside force: another character, society, or some natural force
External Conflict
A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things without using the words like, as, than, or resembles
What is Metaphor?
The person telling the story knows everything that is going on in the story
What is 3rd person Omniscient?
The most exciting part of a story; the part where a reader knows / does not know what the outcome will be
What is Resolution?
Inviting readers to infer a character's qualities from characters' actions, speech or appearance
What is Indirect Characterization?
The uncertainty or anxiety we feel about what is going to happen next in a story
Suspence
A figure of speech using deliberate exaggeration or overstatement

The part of a story where the main character takes some action to resolve the conflict and meets with problems
What is Complication?
A character depicted with such psychological depth and detail that he or she seems like a "real" person?
What is a Round Character?
The character or force that presents an obstacle to the main character
Antagonist
A kind of metaphor in which a nonhuman thing or quality is talked about as if it were human
