How do you foster a love for literature with your students?

When I interviewed my third grade teacher Mr.Cardella he stated, "choose literature that speaks to your heart so that hopefully students will love literature just as much as you." Children's literature is a way to connect the child to the love and beauty in the world.

How did you help me develop in literacy as a child?

I interviewed my mother and she stated," we read together throughout the day and before bed, I made sure you had a library card when you were in kindergarten, we visited the library weekly and attended programs there, played board games together(scrabble, boggle jr, candy land, etc.), went on walks talking about what we saw, sang together and I encouraged imaginary play (school, hairdresser, nurse, librarian, pet owner, waitress, chef and band director).

What are some television programs that promoted literacy?

I watched between the lions, pappy drew it, sesame street, out of the box, zoom, Cyberchase, Lounette and Molly and Zoboomafoo.

Why is it critical to a student's self-esteem, that they are protected from failing, particularly if they are reluctant learners?

It is important to make success unavoidable and to encourage and direct the student to literature of great personal interest.

What obstacles to teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening do students face?

The school may have a lack of access to literacy such as a small selection of books in the library and limited funding. Students may not have a role model or someone read to them at home.

Why do you think literature plays a profound role in a student's life?

Mr.Cardella also mentioned that literature plays an  important role in people's lives because "our love, our fears, our longing for good and connection can be expressed and shown through literature." Literature allows you to learn physically and spiritually life's precious mysteries by connection to the characters and their experiences.

What programs did you use at home?

My mom mentioned that I had a barbie educational laptop, the school sent literacy packs, we watched videos that had words such as song lyrics, we had a word board that read the word aloud when you placed the letter tiles to make the word, we used leap frog and had a reading tutor come to the house.

How do you think  literacy has changed over time?

There is less book reading and more emphasis on technology. We now use our phones and the internet to look up news articles, read information on social media, watch videos, research about a topic and read online books from Amazon prime. People also read books on their Nook and Kindle.

How can you support literacy development in the classroom?

It is important to create a classroom environment that supports literacy through engaging activities, daily five and provides opportunities to practice reading, writing and communication skills.

When you run into a student who has no interest in literature how do you engage them?

It is important as a teacher to know the interests of each student. The teacher can provide the student with an interest survey and select books that are geared towards their personal interest and encourage them.

How did you help me develop as a student in literature?

I also interviewed my Roberts professor John O'Kane who discussed that he helped me develop in literacy by encouraging,supporting and believing in you to  help you build confidence. He also emphasized that it is important to get to know and build a relationship with your students to learn how to teach them, guide them and spark their interests.

What did literacy look like for you as a child?

My mom discussed that she read with her parents, pretended she was a librarian and made library cards to put in each of her books and volunteered at her school library.

Do you feel that replacing technology with reading materials hinders a child's development?

It depends on what is being read and researched online because some sources aren't accurate or considered literature. However there are phonics programs and educational laptops that can be used as a supplement to reading material.

How can you create a love for literature for a child?

You can show a genuine interest in reading by reading literature that you are passionate about to the child, having the child complete a reading interest survey and browsing books together with the child that interest them.

How do you set a student reading for success and not failure?

The teacher should continue to encourage the child, differentiate reading levels, practice sight word fluency and build the student's confidence.

Why is literacy essential to learning?

Professor John O'Kane is essential to learning it helps student create analytical and creative thinking, develops insight and teaches judgment on decisions.

Do you think it is important for families to involved in their child's literacy and if so why?

My mom stated, "yes it is important to teach your child at literacy at home so that they can learn the foundational skills and vocabulary to read. If it is enforced at home than they are more likely to be interested in reading and it is a great bonding experience and teachable moment as a parent."

Do you think that technology contributes to creating an interest in reading for a child?

I think that technology entices a child with animation, characters and colored pictures which sparks their interest in literacy.

What programs help support a child's learning in literature?

You could use LLI, ABC Mouse, Iready teacher toolbox, Raz kids, Lexia, Reading A-Z, early learning HQ and words their way.

How can we provide intervention for students without them feeling different than others?

As an educator you could provide the interventions to the whole class and individualize it to specific students.You could group students heterogeneously with combined ability levels so that group members can help each other, begin each guided reading group with sight word flashcards or fluency activity, provide sentence frames to the whole class and writing templates to the whole class.

How might classroom displays support literacy?

Professor John O'Kane also discussed how classroom displays can support literacy by showing images of books that kids love to read. They can also have posters displayed with quotes and wise sayings, famous people from diverse backgrounds and word of the day.

How can you support literacy in the household?

My mom mentioned scheduling a designated time to read with your child, talking to your child throughout the day during different tasks and in the environment, encouraging your child to try their best and giving your child the tools and supports that they need to help them.

Students expect technology to be incorporated in lessons and activities to engage them.

What support should I give students to help them read and comprehend the text? When should I provide that support?


Students benefit from the most support during the actual reading. You can ask questions and provide them with reading strategies to decode the words.Many English language learners may benefit from before reading strategies that help them prepare for reading about unknown concepts and ideas.

What are the common difficulties in literature that students struggle with?

Students mainly struggle with decoding text, comprehension and fluency speed.
