'The hallway was bright and loud. She found a corner and waited for it to be over.' What is the mood of this passage?
Anxious, isolated, overwhelmed. The setting and the character's withdrawal create the feeling without stating it.
Direct or indirect?
"Darry was like that. He was hard as a rock and about as human."
Direct characterization. The narrator states that he is "as human as a rock".
External conflict; Man v. society
A thematic concept is an overarching topic that the book deals with, where a thematic statement is a FULL SENTENCE that says what a book ARGUES or TEACHES about the thematic concept.
