Linear Plot
A plot or story that follows chronological order
Direct Characterization
Information about the character stated directly in the text.
Un-reliable Narrator
Storyteller who lacks credibility because of bias, deception, inexperience, cognitive impairment, lack of information, or other factor that undermines the accuracy of a narrative.
Slant Rhyme
Near or oblique rhyme. Words within or at the end of lines almost rhyme.
Irony
Saying the opposite of what you mean; also used to describe situations in which the results of an action are dramatically different than intended.
Non Linear
Where the story does not follow chronological order, may incorporate flashbacks, stream of consciousness, and other techniques to develop the story.
Indirect Characterization
Characters traits that are implied and require inference based on the characters actions or words.
Narrative Pace
The authors choice of order and tempo for the plot.
Onomatopoeia
Sound device that mimics the sound the word makes when spoken.
Paradox
Phrase or assertion that appears to contradict itself (but the contradiction itself may have its own meaning)
Flashbacks
A structure that interrupts linear chronological time to show readers what happened in the past
Static Character
A character that remains unchanged throughout the story.
Narrative Arc
Structure of a narrative in which conflict creates a plot, leading to a climax and an ending with a resolution.
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds within a line of poetry.
Theme
Universal statement, or idea that one gets from life.
Foreshadowing
Structural elements that provide hints and clues about events that are yet to occur.
Dynamic Character
A character that develops or changes throughout the course of the story.
The narrator addresses the audience–”you” and the reader becomes a character in the story.
Consonance
Repetition of consonant sounds within a line or lines of poetry.
Denotation
The literal, dictionary-definition meaning of a word.
Juxtaposition
Placement of things side by side for the purpose of comparison.
Characterization
A characters physical, mental, and beliefs.
3rd Person
Has 3rd person limited where they can not see peoples thoughts and is purely from the outside, but also has Omniscient where they can see everyone's thoughts.
Foot
Basic repeated sequence of meter composed of two or more accented or unaccented syllables.
Hyperbole
Figure of speech in which a writer or speaker exaggerates for the sake of emphasis.
