The beginning of the story, Character, setting and important background information is given to the reader.

The conflict is the problem that the protagonist is dealing with. The conflict is what drives the plot and plot diagram. The conflict is also responsible for the protagonist's transformation.

The main events in order in a story. Plot is sequenced, beginning, middle and end.

A genre is a category of literature identified by form, content, and style.

Define antagonist. 

The main character's opponent. May be a character or force of nature.

Rising Action

After the inciting incident, or situation that starts the conflict you have the rising action. The conflict is explained. The character begins their journey.

The protagonist has a problem with another character in the novel, most likely the antagonist.

Define characterization.

How the author develops a character, utilizing inner traits and showing the reader a character's personality.

Describe realistic fiction.

Realistic fiction has a believable plot, setting and characters and takes place during present day.

The protagonists sidekick, and important minor character.

Climax

The turning point in the novel, often the most exciting part of the problem. The character must decide how they are going to handle the conflict they have been dealing with.

Character VS. Self Conflict

The protagonist is struggling with an inner conflict, such as being a bystander or feeling anxious.

Define setting.

The time, geographic location, mood and tone of a story. Setting includes season, weather, historical time period and culture.

Define historical fiction.

Set in an important historical time period. Takes place in the past and the plot and characters reflect this time period.

Falling Action

The falling action is how the main character deals with their problem and eventually solves it.

Character VS. Nature

The conflict involving the protagonist has to do with something in the natural world, such as disease or a natural disaster (fire, tornado...)

The atmosphere created in the story. How the reader feels when reading a story.

Describe fantasy. 

The plot, characters and setting are made up and could not happen. The story usually has magical elements.

How the protagonist changes as a result of the conflict in the novel.

Resolution

The resolution is the conclusion of the story. We see the transition the protagonist has gone thru and are often given information about what happens next in the main character's life. The resolution explores what happens after the protagonist has solved the problem.

The central conflict revolves around a large group or community of people. A great example are the people living on Venus and Margot in "All Summer in a Day".

A big idea or message the author communicates to the reader thru plot and character development.

Describe myth. 

A short story. Myths are from many cultures and involve gods and goddesses. They are very old, started out being told orally and have been passed down for many years.
