Something concrete, such as an object, person, place, or happening, that sounds for or represents something abstract such as an idea, a quality, or a conclusion.
What is Symbol?
Refers to the feeling, emotion, and/or mood a writer conveys to the reader through the description of setting and objects
What is Atmosphere?
The time and place of a story
What is Setting?
This refers to who is telling or narrating a story.
What is Point of View?
"Don't judge a book by its cover" is a n example of this.
What is Cliche?
An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; Rappers use this alot.
What is Allusion?
Is established in order to affect the reader emotionally and psychologically and to provide a feeling for the narrative
What is Mood?
The point in a story that creates the greatest suspense or interest
What is Climax?
The use of clues or hints to suggest events that will occur later in the plot
What is Foreshadowing?
"Jumbo shrimp" and "Brawling love, O loving hate" are examples of this?
What is Oxymoron?
The series of related events that make up a story.
What is Plot?
A literary device that contradicts itself but contains a plausible kernel of truth.
What is Paradox?
The use of a word to suggest a different association than its literal meaning,
What is Connotation?
This refers to the mood implied by an author's word choice and the way that the text can make a reader feel.
What is Tone?
"Stop beating around the bush" is an example of this.
What is an Idiom?
A struggle between two opposing forces.
What is Conflict?
A figure of speech in which inanimate objects are endowed with human qualities.
What is Personification?
The main idea or underlying meaning a writer explores in a novel, short story, or other literary work.
What is Theme?
A figure of speech and type of metaphor that compares two different things using the words “like” or “as.”
What is Simile?
The use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning; usually humorous or sardonic literary style
What is Irony?
A stated likness or comparison between two unlike things or the relationship that exists between them.
What is Analogy?
Its literal definition—its dictionary definition—and contains no emotion.
What is Denotation?
"Yo mama hair is so short she can roll it with rice" is an example of this.
What is Hyperbole?
Includes language that appeals to all of the human senses, including sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell
What is Imagery?
A figure of speech that directly compares one thing to another for rhetorical effect.
