What is biology?

The study of life

100

What two elements make something organic?

Carbon and Hydrogen

100

What is the difference between abiotic and biotic factirs?

Abiotic (noliving) biotic (living

100

What does biodegradable mean?

Material can be naturally broken down

100

What are the two types of cells?

Plant and animal cells

200

What is the difference between an independent and dependent variable?

Independent is the "cause," dependent is the "effect"

200

What are all of the four macromolecules?

Proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids

200

What is a pioneer species?

An organism that is the first to arrive in succession

200

What are examples of fossil fuels?

Gas, oil, coal

200

What are the two organelles that plants have that animal cells do not

Chloroplast and cell wall

300

Calculate the average of the following heart rates (75, 78, 80, 92, 88)

82.6

300

Draw and label the structure of an enzyme with the following vocabulary (enzyme, substrate, activation site)

300

What is the difference between primary and secondary succession?

Primary succession has no soil and is conquered by pioneer species. Secondary succession is when you have soil and vegetation was destroyed through a natural disaster

300

What is a way that humans can reduce global warming?

Reduce use of fossil fuels, recycle, use electric cars, etc

300

What are 3 cell organelles AND their functions?

Answers will vary

400

Why do scientists perform experiments more than once? Explain how the amount of data can affect the results

more data leads to more valid conclusions, and it creates more validity to an experiment.

400

What is an enzyme? AND explain how both pH and temperature affect enzyme activity

An enzyme speeds up chemical reactions AND enzymes require a specific or "optimal" pH and temperature to work, or else they will be destroyed or "denature"

400

What will happen to a grass population if the number of hawks is reduced? (The food chain is grass, rabbits, hawks)

The amount of grass will decrease because if rabbits are not hunted, their population will increase, hence more demands for their grass

400

How does the rise of CO2 affect the ice caps?

More carbon dioxide causes temperatures to rise, thus causing the ice caps to melt

400

What is the difference between active and passive transport?

Active is low to high WITH energy (ATP), passive is high to low without energy

500

Identify the different parts of the given experiment: "The amount of milk consumed and strength of bones"

- Independent variable

- Dependent variable

- Control group

- 3 Controls

- Hypothesis

500

Choose one of the four macromolecules (proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids) and explain how a lack of these nutrients can influence homeostasis

Answers may vary

500

Label a correctly labeled food pyramid. Draw the correct flow of energy

Explain how thermal pollution affects the fish population in a lake (think of our lab!)

When excess heat from a factory pours into the lake, it causes the temperature of the lake to rise. This then depletes oxygen within the lake, thus causing the fish to suffocate and then die, reducing their population.

Explain the difference between isotonic and hypertonic and hypotonic solutions. Then, explain what it does to a red blood cell.

Hypertonic is too much solute on the outside of the cell, so water rushes out and RBCs SHRINK. Hypotonic is when solute is inside the cell, causing water to rush in and RBCs SWELL/BURST. Isotonic is a net amount of water and solute, and the RBC remains the same.
