It was a key tool for facilitators to make the virtual training engaging.  It was used for activities, knowledge checks, debriefs and in general made everything a little more fun an interactive.

What 6 technical courses were taught in a virtual setting?

Copper, GPON, High Speed, Wi-Fi, MDU and Optik TV

Both Copper & GPON Outside plant were left out of scope as well as Inside Wire Practices.

Some onboarding courses were also taught virtually but required little to no change to run virtually (Welcome to TELUS, Safety, etc.)

Example of a challenge that was experienced in the virtual classroom.

Slow internet speeds, cameras not working, people napping, distracting backgrounds, distractions at home.

To help manage the classroom experience, a number of us joined the classes through out training to support the facilitators and learner experience.

What happened quicker than it might have without COVID-19?

Getting new simulations, getting equipment to do live demos and converting the core technical courses

5 Weeks

How long we had to complete converting the new hire technical courses into a virtual modality.

CLS hurriedly travelled 300km to deliver "this" innovative aid to a Virtual New Hire facilitator right in time for class. BONUS* - Who was the delivery person?

Phone Mount and Harness
BONUS* - Mark Wilson

The phone mount and harness were used for live demos in every technical courses.  In MDU, the facilitator actually went to his phone room to give a real life demo.

How many facilitators did we have for Virtual New Hire training?

We had 12 core instructors with 2 for each course.

We moved away from a regional facilitation model and opted to have a core group of facilitators who could focus on 1 or 2 courses which has allowed for amazing feedback and a more consistent experience for our new hires.

What had to be skipped in order to meet time lines?

We had many content additions and changes that needed to be done at light speed, we had to skip agenda creation and peer reviews.

To help overcome this, the developers created a strong partnership with our facilitators so feedback around pace of class, content and over all time requirements could be addressed on the fly.  Even though we had to forgo peer reviews, we were able to make meaningful updates based on feedback from everyone involved in making new hire virtual.

Who went above and beyond with providing content & delivering classes?
