On Montresor’s crest there is a snake and a foot/ankle. The crest also states “no one will punish me with impunity.” On the crest the foot which stepped on the snake represents Fortunato, who punished Montresor. The snake is Montresor as he gets back at Fortunato by biting his ankle. This truly shows how Montresor was not going to let Fortunato punish him and get away.
