Explain the curse of Howard Hughes and why it was created.

Howard Hughes believed that the bell tower would cast a shadow on his airfield and interfere with his radio communications. The LMU president at the time basically said, You can pay to move it, or it stays. Hughes then responded that as long as he lives, LMU would never expand. And we didn't. LMU was unable to secure the purchase of any more land until the year following Hughes' death in 1976.

How did LMU get the Berlin Wall?

In short, a political science professor took leave after the wall fell to go to Berlin and write a book. While there, he realized that they were donating pieces of the wall to institutions around the globe. He decided that LMU had to have one before UCLA. Through a series of channels, he got one donated to LMU as a gesture to the city of LA during the Berlin-LA 30-year sister city anniversary. But you should read the full Loyola article on it.

The original plan for the Westchester campus was to house 10,000 students. As the campus broke ground in 1928, the pledged funds were gone when the market crashed the following year.

No, He was not. He went to St. Michael's College and the New Mexico School of Mines. His foundation had a lot of money and a history of giving a significant portion of it to Catholic universities.

Where does the Rains Research Assistant Program come from?

Liliore Rains, a reclusive elderly woman who sought pastoral care from one of LMU's Jesuits, was the heiress to a $250 million fortune from her father, an oil magnate and real estate developer who created Beverly Hills. When she died, she bequeathed her fortune to 6 institutions and some extended family. The $40 million donation was the largest in the university's history and funded an expansion and the research program, which allows professors to hire students as paid research assistants.
