Translating means moving a shape without doing these two things.
Turning and Flipping
A rotation always turns around this.
Turning Centre OR Centre of Rotation
Which coordinate moves up and down?
The Y coordinate.
A reflection causes this type of figure. (hint two words)
Mirror Image
What do we call translations, reflections, and rotations?
Transformations.
If you translate a shape 3 squares right, which coordinate changes?
The X-Coordinate
Which way turns to the left?
Counterclockwise
The point (0,9) is located on which axis?
The y-axis.
When you reflect a shape, what happens to its size and shape?
They stay the same.
Which transformation keeps orientation the same?
Translation
A point moves from (4,7) to (4,2). Describe the translation.
If a shape is rotated 180º, what happens to its orientation?
It appears upside-down or reversed but maintains its shape and size.
Plotting (5,-12) means you move this many squares across and up.
5R, 12D
A shape is reflected over a vertical line of reflections. How do the distances from the line relate?
Each point and its image are the same distance from the line.
Multiple transformations.
A triangle is translated 4 right and 2 down. How would each vertex change?
Add 4 to each x-coordinate; subtract 2 from each y-coordinate.
The entire shape pivots around that vertex; the vertex stays fixed while all other points move in a quarter turn.
Name the coordinates of a point 5 squares right and 3 squares down from (0,9).
(5,6)
If point A is 3 squares from the line of reflection, how far will it move during the reflection?
6 squares.
If you reflect a shape and then translate it, will the final image be the same size and shape as the original?
Yes! Reflections and translations preserve the size and shape.
You want to move a shape from (2,3) to (10,12). Describe one possible set of two translations that would work.
Ex. 8R, then 9U.
A point at (3,6). is rotated 180º around the origin (0,0). What is the new coordinate?
(-3, -6)
Explain one situation where you would use different scales on the x and y axes.
Example, when graphing temperature over time, distance vs. time, or when units on one axis are much larger or smaller.
A triangle has a vertex at (5,4). After reflecting in the X-axis, what is the coordinate of the image point?
(5, -4)
A shape is rotated 90º clockwise around the origin and then reflected over the y-axis. Describe how the orientation might change.
It turns a quarter-turn then flips across the vertical axis, reversing orientation again.
