WWll made him go face to face with those savages. As war raged on longer so did their innate evil(in his opinion). "Masks" were put on his face and they began to become bloodthirsty, so much so in fact they regarded their enemies as "pigs".

What does the Conch symbolize and how does Golding use it to reinforce his theme.
It symbolizes civilization, and he used to to show how as they were growing away from civilization, and in so became more violent and bloodthirsty. In that same way it happened in the world, where the longer they were from societal norms their innate evil emerged.

Beast/evil within us all, the lord of the flies represents the devil , original sin or inherent evil as well as loss of innocence.
