How do staff prompt Joaquin to wait for an item?

Every shift staff will work with Joaquin on waiting tolerance by offering preferred items/activities and then prompting him to wait for the item.

▪After Joaquin can wait without engaging in refusals to participate in tasks, PAO, or AGP then a new time criterion will be established.

oProcedures for teaching Joaquin waiting. First when Joaquin leads staff to an item, staff will say “you have to wait.” Then staff will start a timer for the time criterion determined by the BCBA.

▪If Joaquin waits without engaging in problem behavior, staff will deliver praise and say, “Thanks Joaquin for waiting!” Then staff will deliver the item to Joaquin.

▪If Joaquin does engage in challenging behavior, then the timer will start over again but reduce the time by 30 seconds. Staff will continue to do this until Joaquin can wait without challenging behaviors.

oDrinks not designated for Joaquin can be stored in bags, lockers, or other areas inaccessible and out of sight to minimize opportunities for drink access.

oAll cups and other drink bottles not designated for Joaquin should be discarded in the staff room.
