What is one (1) of the four (4) areas of language knowledge that should be targeted in second language acquisition?
1. Socio-linguistic Competence
2. Discourse Competence
3. Strategic Competence
4. Grammatical Competence
What can speakers do to target language for strategic competence?
1. Compensate for breakdowns in communication
2. Enhance the efficacy of the message communicated
What is communicative competence?
Level of language expertise that enables users to decode messages and to personally navigate the meanings within particular contexts
What are the three (3) components of SLA?
1st Component: Learners who recognize the need to learn the second or target language and who are motivated to do so.
2nd Component: the processes involved require speakers of the target language. These speakers must be fluent enough in the target language to provide learners with access to the language and assistance in language transitions.
3rd Component: A social setting is necessary to second language learning. This setting must bring together the learners and the fluent speakers of the target language in contact that is frequent enough to enable language learning.
