The Hidatsa began hunting them more and more to trade the hides with white settlers. Then, the settlers started hunting them almost to extinction. At the end of the century, the Smithsonian protected them and the numbers started to increase. They continue to increase to this day.

They were fixed with a harness and frame and traveled to where there was firewood. Then, they would pull the stacks of firewood back to the village. They would also haul supplies to and from Like-a-Fishhook village in the winter.
