Respect for those in power is a common theme throughout the play. Why?

If you can gain respect for those who are in power than the likelihood of the higher classmen keeping you around is higher. This is why all of the characters refer to Macbeth as lord once he holds throne

200

What does Macbeth mean when he says, "What is done is done?"

This quote from Macbeth means whatever has happened in the past cannot change. Whatever information Banquo has shared and not shared will not change but murdering Banquo will make sure that none of the information that he carries can be spread anymore

In Scene II Macbeth talks to two murderers about what their deed is, why do you think Macbeth sends a third murderer to kill Banquo?

Macbeth is still worried that the deed will not be completed and feels that he needs as much power as he can get to kill Banquo after deciding to not kill him himself.

200

Repetition of using the word "deed" for a murder and the word "done" for a completed deed. Why won't the characters refer to murders by their actual name?

In this age murdering happened frequently and when the murdering of a person occured it was a quest or challenge that needed to be completed. Once the deed had been completed there was a lot of weight that came off of the characters shoulders.

200

What is this quote saying, "Well let's away, and say how much is done."

The murderers have killed Banquo and now have his body. They want to flee the scene as quick as possible so there is no one suspicious of their actions

300

After Macbeth tells the murderers he plans to kill Banquo, one of the murderers says "you made it known to us" What does this quote mean?

Macbeth must have already devised a plan to kill Banquo but had failed in his attempt. Macbeth knows that Banquo must be murdered or else Banquo will figure out that Macbeth murdered King Duncan and Macbeth will be killed

300

In this Act Lady Macbeth only refers to Macbeth as king. Is this an act of respect or do you think Lady Macbeth is now satisfied that her husband has been named king?

Lady Macbeth referring to her husband as king is for his respect and honor when she talks to Macbeth's servant. Lady Macbeth is still happy that Macbeth has gained the throne and knows she must show respect to the people helping Macbeth keep the throne so she can stay in control

300

Banquo tells Fleance to flee before protecting himself from the murderers. Does he think Fleance's life is more important than his?

Banquo holds a lot of information that many of the characters don't know including the prophecy from the witches that one of Banquo's sons will become the future king. This is why he tells Fleance to flee because if Fleance is still alive, he can take the throne from Macbeth

300

What themes have carried on throughout the play and explain how those themes are present in Act 3 Scenes I,II,III

Trust - Between the murderers and Macbeth. Macbeth has trust in the murderers to kill Banquo even though they have failed once.

The Great Chain of Being - Macbeth wants all of the people who could possibly be next up to power, or have relations with next men to power to be killed

300

Macbeth tells the murderers, "Banquo was your enemy." Do you think that the murderers have already tried to kill Banquo before?

There could be a possible history with the murderers making an attempt to kill Banquo after the prophecy was told to him but we don't hear any of this in the story. This quote still leads us to believe that Banquo has been an enemy of Macbeth for longer than their trust has shown
400

Macbeth starts to become suspicious that Banquo knows about Macbeth's murder of Duncan what previous information does Banquo have that leads him to believe that Macbeth murdered Duncan?

Banquo has heard the witches prophecy and knows that Macbeth was going to be king. If Macbeth wanted to become king so badly then he is the only person that would have the audacity to kill Duncan so power would come upon him quicker

400

Macbeth tells his wife to be innocent of the knowledge till thou applaud the deed. What does this show about Macbeth's anxiety for killing Banquo?

Macbeth knows he has made a mistake by not going to kill Banquo himself even though Fleance might have found out about the killing. Macbeth is saying that he cannot reveal anymore information and will not be satisfied until Banquo is dead.

400

At the end of Scene III one of the murderers says "There's but one down; the son is fled." What does this quote tell us about a plan we may not have heard about?

The murderers order was to kill Banquo because Macbeth saw him as a threat to reveal his murder of Macbeth but the murderers seem to have also wanted to kill Fleance because they believe that he is the son of Banquo that will be next to the throne after Macbeth

400
In some ways, hope is a theme that arrises throughout these 3 scenes. Macbeth is hoping for something to happen. What does Macbeth hope for and why is he worried that it might fail?

Macbeth is hoping for the murderers to finish off Banquo. Macbeth feels that he made a mistake by not killing Banquo himself so hoping that the murderers do their deed is all Macbeth can do after his decision

400

The murderers say, "He needs not our mistrust, since he delivers our offices and what we have ot do to the direction just." What is this quote saying?

This quote is saying that Macbeth has already laid out all of his orders and plans for the murderers for them to have the smoothest murder of Banquo. There only job is to finish the deed

500

Banquo's first line in the acts explains how the three weird sisters prophecy had come true when Macbeth becomes king. Do you think Banquo was confident that in the future he was going to be alive for one of his sons to become king and how does the prophecy now affect his sons who could now be next in line for the throne?

Banquo believed in the prophecy until his death and knew that if Macbeth becoming king happened that one day he would be the father of the next king. The problem is neither of Banquo's sons know about the prophecy so the probability of them becoming the next king is unlikely unless Macbeth dies and someone grants the throne to one of Banquo's sons.

500

As Lady Macbeth talks to Macbeth about the murder that will take place Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to continue being bright and jovial. Macbeth then responds by saying that they should honor Banquo make him feel comfortable at the feast. What do these two quotes say about the trust and evilness of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth?

Lady Macbeth is once again helping Macbeth in plotting out his murder. Lady Macbeth knows that Banquo sees Macbeth as a loyal friend yet is still suspicious of Duncan's death. If Macbeth is bright and jovial covering his emotions of evilness then Banquo will trust Macbeth more that he did not murder Duncan and will be less aware that he will be killed that night

500

Before Banquo's death he shouts "It will be rain tonight" Connect this quote to the opening scene with the three witches

The witches could have encouraged Macbeth to send the murderers to kill Banquo and Banquo realizes that the prophecy was never going to come true in his favor
