It is important because we need to be able to understand what a story is about about what the author wants us to understand.

Rain cloud because the farther down you go the more specific you get. the rain cloud is at the topic and the main topic is the most generic (one or two words). Also, you cant have a umbrella or rain drops without a rain cloud and you cannot have a main idea or supporting details without a main topic.
