200

Medium: How are plains formed?

Water and ice carry the bits of dirt, rock, and other material, called sediment, down hillsides to be deposited elsewhere. As layer upon layer of this sediment is laid down, plains form.

200

Medium: Why are mountains thinly populated?

Mountain regions are thinly populated because they have steep slopes and lack in fertile soil. These conditions are not favourable for agriculture. The steep slopes on the other hand, make transportation and physical communication difficult.

200

Medium: How are mountains useful to man?

The mountains are a storehouse of water. Many rivers have their source in the glaciers in the mountains. Reservoirs are made and the water is harnessed for the use of people. Water from the mountains is also used for irrigation and generation of hydro-electricity.

Medium: Why are river plains thickly populated?

The river plains are very suitable for human habitation. People get flat land for building houses and for cultivation. The soil of river plains is fertile. Hence people live here and cultivate land for their living.

Medium: What is the difference of a mountain and plateau?

Mountain: A mountain is generally taller than a plateau, and it has more of a steep slope.        Plateau: A plateau is a flat area of land that is typically higher in elevation than the surrounding area.

Hard: What are Fold mountains? Define them with 1 or more example.

Fold Mountains: The Himalayan mountains and The Alps are young fold mountains with rugged relief and high conical peaks. Fold mountains are created where two or more of Earth's tectonic plates are pushed together. This in term Forms Fold mountain (s).

Hard: What is a Mountain?

A mountain is an elevated portion of the Earth's crust, generally with steep sides that show significant exposed bedrock. Although definitions vary, a mountain may differ from a plateau in having a limited summit area, and is usually higher than a hill, typically rising at least 300 metres (980 ft) above the surrounding land.

Hard: What are Volcanic mountains? Give examples.

Volcanic mountains are formed as a result of volcanic activities on the surface of the Earth. The magma inside the Earth erupts out as lava through the cracks on the Earth's surface. This cools down repeatedly to form volcanic mountains.

Eg: Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt Fujiyama.

Hard: Define Plains, Mountains, Plateaus.

Plains: A plain is a broad area of relatively flat land. Plains are one of the major landforms, or types of land, on Earth. They cover more than one-third of the world's land area. Plains exist on every continent.

Mountain: They usually have steep, sloping sides and sharp or rounded ridges, and a high point, called a peak or summit. Most geologists classify a mountain as a landform that rises at least 1,000 feet (300 meters) or more above its surrounding area. A mountain range is a series or chain of mountains that are close together.

Plateaus: The terrain at the western end of the hills consists of a plateau region with sandstone outcrops and slow-flowing streams. The hinterlands are criss-crossed by logging roads and most of the plateaus are already developed agricultural lands.
