The Muslim Schism affected the Safavids by providing a cause for their empire. As a Shia empire, they believed that the Sunni were impure, and had corrupted the faith, and started conquering Dar-al-Islam under the impression that it was a holy Jihad. This caused the empire to expand, but ultimately caused its downfall as most of Dar-al-Isla was Sunni.
