Map Types/Directions
A type of map that shows geographic landforms and features. In other words, it’s what the earth physically looks like if you were to view it from above.
Physical Map
The tool on the map that shows directions.
Compass Rose
An imaginary line which divides the world into northern and southern hemispheres; 0° latitude.
Equator
Name the intermediate direction: SW
Southwest
The four main directions; north, south, east and west.
Cardinal Directions
Tells what the map is about.
Title
A unit of measure used to determine exact location; pair of numbers.
Coordinates
Name the intermediate direction: NW
Northwest
A type of map which displays a pattern of a theme or a series of attributes.
Thematic Map
Pictures on a map that stand for something in the real world.
Symbols
An imaginary line which divides the world into eastern and western hemispheres; 0° longitude
Prime Meridian
Name the intermediate direction: NE
Northeast
The four middle directions; northeast, southeast, northwest, southwest.
Intermediate Directions
A feature on a map that shows what the symbols mean.
Map Key
Lines run east and west but tell direction north and south of the Equator.
Latitude
Name the intermediate direction: SE
Southeast
A type of map which shows countries, states, cities, borders, boundaries, roads, buildings, etc. Different colors are used to help the viewer tell the difference between different countries.
Political Map
The tool on the map that shows distance.
Map Scale
Lines run north and south but tell direction east and west of the Prime Meridian.
Longitude
Name the cardinal directions: N, E, S, W
