Continued use of a substance despite it's negative consequences is the definition of this.

What is dependence.

Someone who is dependent on a substance considers that to be the most important thing in their life.  If you are dependent on a substance, you will likely experience withdrawal, either physical or psychological or both, depending on the substance, when you stop using it.

It is possible to be dependent on marijuana.  Someone who is dependent might exhibit symptoms such as inability to eat without smoking first, inability to sleep without smoking first, irritability, restlessness.  As of right now, everyone in here has now faced a negative consequence of their use. (you have to, to be in this class).   Ask if they know anyone who can't function if they are not high.

100

On average, this is how long marijuana can stay in your system and be detected on a standard drug test.

What is one month.

Depending on a number of factors: the amount used, body type, body weight, metabolism, fluid intake, etc. Some advanced methods can detect marijuana use for up to a year. They use hair samples for this test and can use a hair from anywhere on the body.

100

Which drug class does marijuana fall into?

A) Stimulant

B) Depressant

C) Hallucinogen

What is all three categories.

We are not talking about different strains either.  Marijuana does three different things to the body.  It is a major depressant (which is why people use it for the "relaxing qualities") and why it makes you sleepy.  Marijuana is a stimulant because it speeds up your heart rate and can make you paranoid.  Marijuana is a hallucinogen because it alters your sense of space and time, but it does not make you see things that aren't there (visual hallucination).

Myth or Fact?

You can die from using K2 (Spike, Spice, etc)?

What is Fact.

Synthetic marijuana or spice is marketed as the same thing as marijuana, but a legal version that can pass a drug test.  There are tests now that can detect the presence of the chemicals in synthetics but they are not used often.  Unfortunately, Spice contains many poisonous chemicals that are not tested on humans.  It is sold as incense and legal in some places but every bag is different, which makes it hard to regulate.

It is plant matter that is sprayed with poisons that has caused many deaths and ER visits, due to extreme psychosis.  Other negative reactions include rapid heart rate, extreme anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, vomiting, suicidal thoughts and violent behavior (this may be a good opportunity for a discussion).  Ask if anyone here knows of someone that has had a negative reaction to Spice.  It is also important to let them know that the manufacturers of these products are targeting youth specifically, by making the packaging "fun" looking.

Name the psychoactive chemical ingredient in marijuana.

What is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol)

This is the chemical ingredient that gives you the "high" feeling. The higher the THC, the more potent the marijuana.  Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is the scientific name.

After alcohol, this substance is the one most often linked to car accidents.

What is marijuana.

A nationwide study of deadly car crashes found that 36.9% of drivers who tested positive for drugs had used marijuana.  Marijuana affects skills required for safe driving-alertness, concentration, coordination, and reaction time.  Marijuana makes it hard to judge distances and react to signals and sounds on the road.

200

Is this statement true or false?

If caught with marijuana concentrates, the charge is higher than just Unlawful Possession of Marijuana (UPM).

What is True.

Concentrates are more potent and contain more THC; therefore, they are thought of as a controlled substance.  If you are caught with dabs, wax, or concentrates you will be charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree, which is a misdemeanor charge and could carry a jail sentence of up to a year and/or a $1000 fine.

Name two mental effects that can result from the use of marijuana.

What are temporary hallucinations, temporary paranoia, worsening symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, relaxed inhibition, vivid senses and lack of concentration.

When coming down from a high, users may feel depressed or extremely tired.  While marijuana use produces a mellow experience for some, it can heighten agitation, anxiety, insomnia and irritability for others, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH).  It can also lead to an increased risk of psychosis, especially for those who have a family history of psychotic disorders, ir have experienced any childhood abuse.

200

Myth or Fact?

Marijuana use leads to dependence or addiction?

What is Fact.

Even though marijuana users do not become chemically addicted, it is possible to become dependent on marijuana, in which a person feels withdrawal symptoms when not taking the drug.  Those that use more frequently report irritability, mood and sleep difficulties, decreased appetite, cravings, restlessness and/or various forms of physical discomfort that peak within the first week after quitting and last up to 2 weeks.

200

Name the chemical found in marijuana that gives it medicinal use.

What is CBD (cannabidiol).

This is the chemical ingredient that suppresses nausea, increases appetite and allows for other medical purposes.  The scientific name is cannabidiol.  Most medical marijuana is heavy on the CBD and does not produce a high.  Something to keep in mind us that medical marijuana is never smoked, it is used in other forms such as edibles, pills, vaporization, patches and through a dropper (sublingual).  No medical doctor recommends smoking something to improve your health.

A marijuana or any other charge involving drugs can cause a student to lose this.

What is federal financial aid.

Any drug charge can interfere with your ability to receive and maintain federal financial aid in New York State. If you are a college student and you receive even a UPM (Unlawful Possession of Marijuana) you can lose your financial aid. This is something extremely important to think about when considering what you want to do in the future and how using marijuana can affect that. It’s also important to know that if you do receive a drug charge while receiving federal financial aid, your aid can be cut off and you are required to pay back any monies that you have received thus far.

300

Is this statement true or false?

If you are caught with edibles, police officers test the amount of THC in them and that is how you are charged.

What is False.

If you are caught with edibles, police base the charge on how much the edibles weigh, so if you have a pound of pot brownies, you will get charged for a pound of marijuana.  If you have edibles and marijuana, the police will put them both on the scale and your charge will be based upon the combined weight of them both.

300

Is this statement true or false?

It is possible to have a lethal overdose of marijuana.

What is False.

According to the National Cancer Institute, cannabinoid receptors, unlike opioid receptors, are not located in the brain stem areas that control respiration, so overdose death does not occur.  However, there are plenty of ER visits for people who are experiencing extreme discomfort, unease and shaking and extreme psychotic reactions.  There have been many reports of ER visits due to over consumption of recommended doses of edibles.  And there have also been many reports of children consuming edibles and having overdose reactions to THC.  Overdosing occurs when too much of a substance is ingested and a toxic reactions occurs that results in serious, harmful symptoms.  It is also important to think about how your body will be affected when mixing marijuana with other substances.  If a substance is a depressant (like marijuana), the effects of both will be amplified, which is referred to as synergism.  Smoking weed can suppress the body's response to drinking too much (vomiting) and this can lead to alcohol poisoning.

300

Myth or Fact?

Mixing marijuana and alcohol can be deadly.

What is Fact.

When an individual consumes too much alcohol, the body's reaction is to throw up to expel the alcohol.  Marijuana is given to cancer patients going through chemotherapy because it stunts the gag reflex, allowing them to keep food down and decrease nausea.  When you smoke marijuana, it is hard for your body to get rid of any excess alcohol.  The alcohol will continue to be absorbed into your system, leading to further alcohol poisoning and possible death.

Name the process of smoking THC-rich resins extracted from the marijuana plant.

What is dabbing

There are various forms of marijuana resins: Hash Oil/Honey Oil-a gooey liquid.  Wax or Budder-a soft solid with a texture like lip balm.  Shatter-a hard, amber-colored liquid.

These extracts can deliver extremely large amounts of THC to the body, and their use has sent people to the ER.  Another danger is in preparing these extracts, which typically involves butane (lighter fluid).  A number of people have caused fires and explosions and have been seriously burned from using butane to make extracts from home.  Make sure to talk about when you are taking any drug, you do not know exactly what is in it, and this can be extremely dangerous.  And although most people so not overdose on marijuana, the potency of dabs can cause unexpected results and has led to an increase in hospitalizations and negative consequences.

400

K2, Spike, Spice and Scooby Snacks are all terms for this substance.

What is synthetic marijuana.

Ask them if they think this is safer than "organic" marijuana.  These terms refer to a wide variety of herbal mixture that produce experiences similar to marijuana (cannabis) and that are marketed as "safe," legal alternatives to marijuana.  These products contain dried, shredded plant material and chemical additives that are responsible for their psychoactive (mind altering) effects.  "Spice" products do contain dried plant material, but chemical analyses show that their active ingredients are synthetic (or designer) cannabinoid compounds-and labeled "not for human consumption."

This New York State Law protects anyone under the influence who is seeking lifesaving help for themselves or someone else due to a drug, alcohol or other life-threatening emergency from being arrested and prosecuted.

What is The Good Samaritan Law.

For instance, if you are doing heroin with a friend and your friend overdoses, you can call for help, even if you have needles or paraphernalia on you.  Some exceptions: if you have felony level drug amounts or if police come and there are signs of a larger dealing operation (drugs and money everywhere), or if you provide someone a drug that causes them to overdose--the Good Samaritan Law will not protect you.  You don't want to know that you could have saved a life and did nothing to help because you were afraid of getting into trouble.

When smoking a joint, approximately what is the temperature of the smoke as it enters your lungs? (Fahrenheit).

A) 75 degrees

B) 150 degrees

C) 250 degrees

D) 450 degrees

What is C) approximately 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

This burns your lungs, making them swell and inflame.  This causes scarring and damage to your lungs.

Myth or Fact?

Our grandparents and grandparents smoked pot, and they turned out just fine.

What is Fact.

A lot of them have turned out just fine, but there are a lot of factors that we can't predict about you and future generations.

One of the main differences is the potency of today's marijuana. Back in the 60's and 70's, the average THC concentration of marijuana was about 1.37%.  Today's average is between 10-12%.  We are also seeing marijuana concentrates (wax, shatter, budder), as high as 80-85% potency.  We don't have enough information from studying this high-potency marijuana to be able to say what the future holds for today's smokers.

400

This term refers to a drug that people think is not as dangerous or addictive, that can lead to the use of harder and more extreme drugs

What is a gateway drug.

Common gateways include alcohol, inhalants, tobacco, opiates and marijuana.

Most people do not start off using hard drugs, like meth or cocaine-they often graduate to these substances when they no longer get the high they are after from the previous substance(s).  Some drug and alcohol users do not end up turning to other drugs, but many dependent people do start off using a drug they thought wasn't very dangerous or addictive. Make sure to talk about how opiates are the gateway to heroin (also an opiate).

This is how many IQ points a chronic marijuana smoker can lose if they start smoking in their teens.

What is 6-8 points.

Recent research has shown that people with persistent marijuana use disorder who began using marijuana heavily as teens, permanently lost an average of 6-8 points by mid-adulthood.  To put this in perspective, you are looking at about a 10-12 point grade loss on a test or homework.

500

Which percentage of college student sexual assaults are associated with alcohol use?

A) 34%

B)50%

C)67%

D)85%

What is B)50%.  On average, at least 50% of college students' sexual assaults are associated with alcohol use.

Male victims-47% of the sexual assaults reported by college men involve alcohol consumption, and in 81% both victim and perpetrator had been drinking.

Female victims-55% of assaults involve consumption of alcohol and in 97% of cases, both victim and perpetrator had consumed alcohol.

500

Name three long term effects of marijuana use.

What are heart disease, lung cancer, liver cancer, reduced thinking and problem solving, reduced memory and learning functions, negative skin effects (acne and aging).

500

Myth or Fact?

You can cheat a urine test.

What is Myth.

You can't, and won't.  There are tons of products that claim to flush out drugs from you system, but THC can be detected for up to 10 for a casual smoker and 30 days for a chronic users.  These products only dilute your urine and most facilities test for dilution.  They would flag the sample as invalid and would request a second sample.

Name two substances that marijuana is sometimes laced with.

What are fentanyl, carfentanyl, LSD, cocaine, meth, PCP,and ketamine.

Unless you grew it yourself, you don't know what is in any drug that you are getting.  You don't know how your body is going to react to the added chemicals mixed with the marijuana.  What do you think your drug dealer is most concerned with, money, or your well being?
