The basic unit of life
What is a Cell?
Outer wall, that separates the internal fluid (cytoplasm) from the exterior environment of the cell and controls the exchange of material between them
What is the plasma membrane?
Complex structures within a cell that are specialized for specific jobs.
What are organelles?
Simplest and smallest cells that have no membrane bound organelles.
What are Prokaryotic Cells?
Provides form and mechanical support and is located outside the plasma membrane.
What is a Cell Wall?
Small structures made from protein and RNA; main function is to produce proteins.
What are ribosomes?
Complex and organized cells that have many membrane bound organelles that perform many functions within the cell.
What are Eukaryotic Cells?
Carry most of the cells DNA, and are located in the nucleus.
What are Chromosomes?
Contains the information that the cell needs to perform its work and holds the cells genetic information.
What is the nucleus?
Breaks down sugar molecules to provide the energy the cell needs.
What are Mitochondria?
Used as a means of cellular transport
What is the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Packages materials for extracellular transport.
What is the Golgi Complex?
Organelles used to store materials and food.
What are Vacuoles?
Site of photosynthesis in plant cells
What is a chloroplast?
Structures used for movement, located on the exterior of the cell.
What are Cilia?
Multiple Atoms make up a...
Give an example
Molecule
A grouping of similar cells with a specific function. Give an example.
What are tissues?
A group of organs that work together in cooperation with each other.
Give an example.
What is an organ system?
An individual capable of reproduction
Give an example
Organism
A well-defined structure within a cell. Give an example
What is a Cellular Organelle?
Compare and contrast Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells.
Prokaryotic: Small, Simple, Basic cells, with no membrane bound organelles. Bacteria for example.
Eukaryotic: Complex, organized cells with membrane bound organelles. Make up multicellular organisms, like sharks for example.
List the levels of organization from smallest to largest.
Atom, Molecule, Cellular Organelle, Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ system, Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem.
What are the 2 organelles found in the Prokaryotic Cell, and what are their functions?
Cell Wall, provides form and mechanical support.
Ribosomes, Create proteins.
Chloroplasts, Cell Walls are strictly plant cells.
Ribosomes, and cell membranes exist in both.
Explain the difference between a community and an ecosystem. What one factor is added to make a community and ecosystem?
Physical environment (non-living things)
Water, Oxygen, Light, Temperature, Salinity.
All of these non living factors along with living communities are what make an ecosystem.
