The slave woman born in Dorchester County, Maryland who spent years of her life guiding slaves to free states through the Underground Railroad.

Who is Harriet Tubman? She was born in 1822 and escaped slavery in 1849. She mainly rescued slaves on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The Fight chapter in Kindred takes place around 1825-1826, which is when Harriet was 3-4 years old.

Who is Frederick Douglas? He was born in 1818 and escaped slavery in 1838. In 1845, Frederick Douglas published his first autobiography. Frederick was one years old during the Fall chapter in Kindred.

When was 1863? The Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves in territories where there were rebellions. In reality, this did not free any slaves until after the Civil War was over and other laws were passed to end slavery.

Who is Mathias De Sousa? He voted in the Maryland Propietary Assembly in 1642. This shows how black, former indentured servants could vote centuries earlier than free black men after slavery.

The name of the U.S. Supreme Court case that decided slaves could not sue for their freedom after they lived in a free state for an extended amount of time.

What is Dred Scott v. Sanford (1857)? Dred Scott was a slave from Missouri who lived in the free states of Illinois and Wisconsin for many years. He returned to the slave state Missouri so he can sue for his freedom because he lived "freely" in Illinois and Wisconsin for a long time. This court decision denied Dred Scott U.S. citizenship which also denied all other African Americans equal rights as citizens.

The year Maryland colonized its free black population.

When was 1831? The American Colonization Society, derived of many Southern slavery states, started sending each states' free black population to Liberia in 1822 under the authority of Dr. Eli Aryes. Dr. Ashford, a man from Maryland succeeded Dr. Aryes and the Maryland Colonizational Society joined this practice in 1831. 

This was almost ten years after the events of Kindred took place.

Hint: He shares a name with a character from the Bible

Who is Ayyub Ben Suleiman Diallo, otherwise known as Job Ben Solomon? He was sold into slavery in 1731 to work on a Maryland tobacco plantation. He lived there until 1733 when a philanthropist named James Oglethrope freed Job because he was fluent in Arabic. Job lived in England and asked an Englishman to write his biography. This is considered one of the first African American Muslim slave narratives of history.
